Georgian Gold and Garnet Snowflake Pendant

About the Item

Glistening like a glass of fine burgundy held up to the light, this lovely Georgian pendant was made by setting the garnets in a setting with a closed back so that a sliver of foil could be placed in the cup under the garnet. This clever technique was used to attract all available daylight and candlelight at night. The cross resembles a snowflake. It has round, oval and square garnets which mixture gives the cross texture. The gold is 15 Kt the English Standard. It is a treasure in excellent condition despite its 200 year history. It was loved and cared for. The cross measures 1 3/4 inches high and I 1/2 inches wide. Easy to wear with pride. Beautiful to pass on as an heirloom of jewelry history.

Often, she chose to wear jewelry by British makers, in many cases work that was historically inspired and/or sentimental, knowing that her choices were closely observed by the public. These jewels were often relatively modest in value, and accessible to aspiring women of the British middle class. Blood-red cabochon-cut gems have been known throughout history as "carbuncles", and their use in gold jewelry was highly popular in the sentimental, symbolism-loving Victorian period in England. In the 19th century, the new study of of archaeology had revealed that the garnet was a favorite precious stone of the Hellenistic Greeks, who centered carbuncles in wedding jewelry such as gold bracelets and garment appliqués fashioned...
