A Victorian Holbeinesque garnet and chrysoberyl pendant, to the centre an oval cabochon garnet measuring 18 x 14mm, surrounded by polychrome champlevé enamel frame, encrusted with six square-cut chrysoberyls, suspending a chrysoberyl-set drop, all mounted in yellow gold, with finely engraved back with scroll and foliate decorations and hair locket compartment, circa 1870, measuring approximately 7 x 2.9cm, gross weight 18.9 grams. This antique pendant is in fine condition. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold. This handsome and wonderfully detailed Holbeinesque pendant comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Holbeinesque is a term used to describe Victorian jewellery that was made in the style of the Renaissance, particularly inspired by the Northern Renaissance and the paintings of Hans Holbein. Holbein produced sketches of the jewellery worn at the Tudor court, and the sketches were used as reference points by Victorian jewellery designers and craftsmen. This pendant features a glowing central garnet surrounded by a detailed enamelled frame set with chrysoberyl stones. Suspended from the pendant is a further cluster of four chrysoberyls. The enamel is finely detailed in green, red, and deep blue, and provides a luxurious contrast to the red garnet and the chrysoberyl stones. The pendant loop is also enamelled, adding further detail to this dramatic Victorian piece.
