Rare museum quality Latin American three color gold and diamond oval box featuring Allegories of Love.
Mexico City, circa 1800, Mark of Chief Assayer Cayetano Buitron
References: for a similar example- Hillwood Museum, catalogue number 11.132, 1973 bequest of Marjorie Merryweather Post. Silver examples are in the collections of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Denver Art Museum.
The front medallion representative of Passionate Love with a classical vase profusely filled with roses next to a Fig leaf atop a Doric column. The back medallion alluding to Enduring Love with mature trees joined together by a graceful swag over a well balanced fire next to a lean-to. The images garlanded by elegant swags ending in lyre shaped ends symbolic of the Lyre of Aphrodite. The top of the box is centered by a large rose in a diamond shaped lozenge, flanked by rose bouquets. A substantial rose cut diamond on the thumbpiece acts as an opening mechanism.
