C1890 Black and White Double Portrait Hardstone Cameo Ring of Conjugal Pair
About the Item
Oblong overlapping double portrait cameo ring, known as a jugate, and carved of sardonyx, this ring features a Roman soldier and his wife overlaid in light and dark and set to a later 9K cigar band. The two figures are carved from the same piece of stone and mounted on another piece of stone.
Jugate or double portraits date from ancient times and were often carved for members of the Roman Imperial family. The format was revived in the 16th and 17th centuries and extended into the Neoclassical period.
In essence, this is a Victorian (1890) copy of the double portrait cameos which were revived during the neoclassical period (1700-1840) and were themselves copied from jugates dating from antiquity. Examples of jugate cameos from the earlier neoclassical period are shown in images.
Dimensions of the ring face are .75 inch tall and 1/2 inch wide ( 2 cm tall and 1.5 cm wide), US Size 7.5 and can be sized.
The ring can be safely worn everyday.
