Rare 17th Century Late Renaissance Period Diamond Enamel Gold Snake Ring

About the Item

Fine, museum quality Late Renaissance period diamond, white and cobalt enamel gold snake ring 17th Century This beautiful ring is a remarkable example of Late Renaissance period jewelry dating to the first half of the 17th century. The highly refined design and workmanship point to this piece being comissioned by an individual of evolved aethetics. Crafted in high carat gold, tesing above 18K, the snake sinuously twists around the finger, playfully twirling its tail around its neck. The head is embellished with a substantial diamond, finely chased gold with white enamel, the white enameling continuing on the body in a striped pattern flanked by deep cobalt blue enamel stripes. Rather than thining towards the back as is customary, the body of this snake widens at the back, allowing for a better balanced, more comfortable fit. The chasing design between the enamelled bands is nearly identical to that of a mid-17th century ring in the collection of the British Museum, Museum number 2001, 0101.1. The origin of this ring is undoubtedly European, possibly Venetian, based on the elegant design and superb execution. It is exceptionally well preserved, the enamel is almost entirely intact with an excellent age-old patina, the chasing is still well defined while showing age appropriate wear. Size 10.5 US References: For a comparable diamond, enamel and gold example please see Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number 171901713, a reliquary cross of similar enamel color palette and diamonds, formerly in the Collection of J.P. Morgan. The British Museum for a 17th century ring with very similar scroll design, Museum number 20010101.1.
