18th Century, American 'Coin Silver' Coffee Pot Attributed to Nathaniel Helme

About the Item

This rather elegant coffee pot was likely made in the United States during the second half of the 18th Century. Prior to restoration work in 2022 the underside of the pot had remnants of a hallmark 'NH', allowing us to attribute the piece to early American silversmith Nathaniel Helme who was working in South Kingston, Rhode Island between 1761 and 1789. The piece stands on a square footing and has a timber handle and a swan neck spout. Largely void of decoration the piece has a diamond check engraved border around the body, a small leaf to the spout and a naturalistic knop to the lid almost in the style of a pineapple. This wonderful example of colonial American silversmithing is beautifully simple in its construction and design. Marked - formerly with 'NH' likely for Nathaniel Helme Measures - 27.5cm H (to the knop) Total weight of piece - 886 grams.
