Antique Niello and Gold Pocket Watch
About the Item
Tiny maltese crosses and dots create the pattern on this pocket watch. Some examples of niello include a gold or gold washed decoration that add interest. The pocket watch you see here bears a small gold crest on the front center. In other respects, the front is identical to the reverse shown. The stem end is gold washed. The outer rim, sandwiched between the back and the front covers, bears a vine-like pattern. Open the watch from the top by pressing the stem down to reveal a face of gold leaf or enamel, applied to resemble the golden sun . The numerals are black. There is a second hand bottom center.
This watch can be worn on a watch chain tucked into a trouser pocket. It can be worn on a long silver chain that hangs from the belt loop to the pants pocket. This looks marvelous on youthful men and women. A woman will also like it on a doubled long chain on the neck.
To adjust the time, once opened, you will find a small lever on the lower 3 o'clock side. Move it up and turn the stem to the correct hour. The watch is in working condition. Some wear to the niello exists on the reverse edge of rim. This can be seen on the photograph. This is to be differentiated from a chip on the surface. There are none. There is no danger of further wear. There is only a touch of this wear on the front bottom edge. This is expected in an antique watch that has been regularly handled. It does not detract from the beauty or interest. This will not go further. c.1870 Condition: very good.
