Westlake Residence

Family Home by Jan Showers & Associates in Austin, TX

This house was built in the early ‘80’s in the Westlake section of Austin, Texas. It is in a gated neighborhood with each lot consisting of at least one acre. The style of the house is French and the exterior is French limestone. The challenge with this project was to create interiors that were in sync with the exterior. At the time the McDonalds purchased the house, the interiors were colonial. So we created curved coves for the ceilings, changed the floors to a light and appropriate marble and also designed spaces that were comfortable for a young couple with small children. Mrs. McDonald loves to entertain and we made sure that the house worked well for this purpose. There are antique and vintage pieces from Paris and New York purchased specifically for this residence. The colors are all soft with low contrast in the rugs and patterns. We used Donald Kaufman paints throughout. The wallpaper in the dining room was custom made by Fromental for this project and the chandeliers were purchased in Brussels from Marc Heirmans, who is the foremost expert on Murano glass today. The solarium is one of their favorite rooms in the house and is visible from the main entry.
