Cubist Art
CUBIST STYLE
Inspired by the nontraditional ways Postimpressionists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat depicted the world, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered an even more abstract style in which reality was fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Cubism majorly influenced 20th-century Western art as it radically broke with the adherence to composition and linear perspectives that dated back to the Renaissance. Its watershed moments are considered Picasso’s 1907 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in which nude figures are fractured into angular shapes, and Georges Braque’s 1908 painting show, which prompted a critic to describe his visual reductions as “cubes.”
Although Cubism was a revolutionary art movement for European culture, it was informed by African masks and other tribal art. Its artists, which included Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris and Jean Metzinger, experimented with compressing space and playing with the tension between solid and void forms in their work. While their subjects were often conventional, such as still lifes, nudes and landscapes, they were distorted without any illusion of realism.
Cubist art evolved through different distinct phases. In Analytic Cubism, from 1908 to 1912, figures or objects were “analyzed” into pieces that were reassembled in paintings and sculptures, as if presenting the same subject matter from many perspectives at once. The palette was usually monochromatic and muted, giving attention to the overlapping planes. Synthetic Cubism, dating from 1912 to 1914, moved to brighter colors and a further flattening of images. This unmooring from formal ideas of art would shape numerous styles that followed, from Dada to Surrealism.

Grease crayon, lithographic tusche, lead pencil, and charcoal are among the artist's matetials used in making the re-creations in this Album. The paper is handmade and is pure rag Vélin d'Arches. The etchings in the special Albums numbered 1 to 35 were pulled in the Ateliers Grommelynck, Paris. This Album comprises three of Picasso's studio sketchbooks dated respectively by the artist according to day, month, and year, as follows: 25.4.64 -20.5.64, 15.9.04-6,10.64, 8.10.64 - 9.10.64. This is the sole edition of re-creations that will ever be made of these hitherto unpublished drawings and three publishers have collaborated in its creation Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris Carl Schünemann Verlag, Bremen. The combined edition has been limited to 1998 Albums for the entire world, and these have been divided into three parallel but separate editions, one for each of the participating publishers, and each separate edition has been numbered from 1 to 666. Special Albums, numbered 1 to 35 in each edition, include an original etching signed by Picasso. Of this etching, one hundred twenty-five proofs have been pulled, with twenty reserved for the artist and his friends.

William Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia, in 1896, one of nine children in a poor family. He studied art at an early age, earning a scholarship at the Vilna Art School in Russia, 1908–12. He immigrated to the United States at age 17 in 1913, living in New York with his sister for eight months and then moving to Omaha, Nebraska, to live with his brother in 1915. Working as a house painter, he turned his attention to art, studying briefly with J. Laurie Wallace at the Kellom School in Omaha before moving to Chicago. He entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1916, studying with Ivan Trutnev and Karl A. Buehr, and graduating with honors in life drawing, portraiture, and painting in 1917. He supported himself as a tenor singer in vaudeville, concerts, and opera and received favorable reviews, but he chose to pursue painting instead of singing.
