Louise Nevelson
Tropical Leaf

1971

About the Item

As always, Caviar20 is thrilled to present the esteemed work of Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. Although Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson explored the many different branches of printmaking, as the field experienced a mid-century renaissance. Nevelson expanded her practice as an artist by exploring printmaking. While her sculptural works used a consistent methodology, mostly favoring painted wood in black, her work as a printmaker was more experimental. Nevelson consistently tried different techniques yet maintained an impressive synergy with her sculptural works. This work which appears to be made of slices of slate or even leather, is actually embossed lead. It is one of the best prints that mirrors what Nevelson was doing in three dimensions as it is made of stacked boxes with hold elaborate organic or "tropical" forms within. Not surprisingly this work can be found in several prominent museum collections including the MoMA the United States Library of Congress, the Brooks Museum of Art and several others.
