Finding the Right handbags-purses-bags for You
An integral part of fashion, handbags and purses have been indispensable accessories ever since we began to carry around personal items. Level of craftsmanship, style and shape matters — from coin purses in ancient Greece to early 20th-century opera bags and onward, handbags have evolved considerably over the years to meet our needs and desires, whether or not you happen to be prioritizing functionality over a flashy exterior.
Once, a single “It” handbag ruled each fashion season. No more. Today, lovers of vintage handbags are savvier and have a wider range of shopping options. Nevertheless, classics created by the likes of Louis Vuitton, Dior and Balenciaga still rule.
“It is not a fashion bag — it is a statement bag,” says Mightychic's Debra Kent of Hermès's widely beloved accessories. “When you carry an iconic Hermès bag — Birkin, Kelly, Constance — no one knows how long you have been into this culture or if you are a newbie. Your status is validated immediately.”
First released in 1997, Fendi's Baguette rose to fame along with Carrie Bradshaw, the Sex and the City character portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker. Recently, the design has seen such a resurgence in popularity that Fendi has reissued it.
They are part of design history, so owning a handbag has meaning. As New York–based fashion historian Sarah C. Byrd says, “You have made the choice to invest in this piece because you understand the value of it in the past and in the future to come.”
From a 1980s Chanel black leather quilted mini buckle bag to the rare Hermès Birkin 30cm Himalayan with diamond hardware to a range of 19th-century bags, find a rich variety of vintage and designer handbags and purses spanning numerous brands on 1stDibs — seasonal “It” designation no longer needed.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022To authenticate Fendi bags produced after 2004, look for the holographic tag that bears the serial number. Counterfeiters usually cannot fully reproduce the reflective quality of these tags. For bags made before 2004, check the inside for the serial number. It will appear engraved on a metal plate or embossed onto the leather. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of expertly vetted Fendi bags.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To authenticate a Céline bag, start by checking the date code. A correct one will start with one letter followed by two letters. This represents the factory code. Next, you will find four numbers. The first and third tell you the month of production, and the second and fourth stand for the production day. For example, a bag that says 0227 has a production date of February 27. Shop a selection of expertly vetted Céline bags on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To tell if a Vivienne Westwood bag is real, check for the plate. Each bag will feature a plate with an inscription of the brand. Look to see that the plate features crisp and evenly spaced lettering. Continue examining the bag to look for any stitching flaws or asymmetrical details. A true Vivienne Westwood bag will be flawless. Always purchase Vivienne Westwood bags from a reputable seller to ensure authenticity. Shop a large collection of Vivienne Westwood bags from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

When you’re trying to authenticate your Hermès Constance bag, there are a few things to remember. For one, there is no “authenticity card” — Hermès doesn’t accompany its Constance bags with any such certificate. There is a label stamp inside any authentic Hermès Constance handbag that reads “Hermès Paris Made in France” — the lettering will be clear and it won’t appear blocky or oversized. Lettering on this label that looks anything other than professionally set and lightly pressed into the leather may mean that your Hermès Constance bag is a fake.
Stitching is a good metric to consider because each Hermès Constance handbag is hand-sewn by Hermès artisans (spotting a fake Birkin bag requires similar inspections) according to Hermès’s celebrated saddle-stitching technique, so while the sew lines will have some inconsistencies, the work will be demonstrative of the company’s commitment to quality, and the stitching will indicate as much.
Hardware on your authentic Hermès Constance bag is always made of a genuine precious metal — the metal is typically brass that is hand-polished and plated with fine gold, palladium or permabrass, while the H-shaped clasp has been silvered, lacquered, set with diamonds, and more over the years. This metal will feel substantial, and it will not tarnish over time.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022You can buy authentic Fendi bags from a number of sources. The official Fendi website sells the bags directly to consumers, and brand-owned boutiques typically stock them. Alternatively, you can buy one from an authorized third-party brick-and-mortar store or online platform. You'll find a selection of Fendi bags on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are several ways to authenticate a Saint Laurent bag. Firstly, look for the serial number, which is sewn into the lining on a piece of leather matching the bag color. Also, the words ‘Made in Italy’ will be imprinted directly under the numbers. Shop a collection of expertly vetted Saint Laurent bags from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To authenticate your Hermès Birkin bag, always check the stitching. The stitching should be uniform and none should be out of place or crooked. Next, if your bag comes with an authenticity card, this should raise a red flag as Hermès does not issue authenticity cards. Find a collection of expertly vetted Hermes Birkin bags from some of the world’s top reputable boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023To authenticate a Chanel tweed bag, look for a serial number at the bottom of the bag. It should be six to eight digits long and appear in crisp characters. Also, examine the clasp. The Cs in a genuine Chanel clasp have flat edges, not rounded ones. The right-hand C will always overlap the one on the left at the top, with the overlapping reversed at the bottom. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Chanel bags.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024To tell if a Coach bag is authentic, first compare the story tag found inside the bag. Compare the creed text displayed on it to photographs of the ones featured in authentic bags shared on trusted online resources. Double-check that the wording is correct, the font is the same and the spacing is even on the bag. Next, examine the hardware. Genuine Coach hardware will be substantial and feel weighty, and its zippers should move smoothly. Finally, check the stitching on all parts of the bag. Crooked, sloppy or loose stitching will usually indicate a fake. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Coach bags.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, all new Balenciaga bags come with an authenticity card. Always purchase Balenciaga bags from a reputable seller to ensure authenticity. If you’re getting a used bag without the card, make sure to check inside to find the serial number. Shop a large collection of Balenciaga bags from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024There are a few places where you can go to authenticate a Louis Vuitton bag. One option is to research online for reputable authentication services that use pictures to evaluate pieces or have you mail in your bag for an evaluation. You can also take your bag to a certified appraiser who specializes in handbags. Keep in mind that Louis Vuitton doesn't offer authentication services through its website or boutiques. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Louis Vuitton bags.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Authenticating a Marc Jacobs bag can be done in a few different ways. One thing to check is the stitching to make sure it’s neat and single-stitched on the bag itself. You’ll find double-stitched loops where the pocket corners and the side are attached. You can also check the hardware on the strap and bag to find the Marc Jacobs logo on each piece—ensure that the engraving is clean and crisp. Find a collection of expertly vetted Marc Jacobs handbags from some of the world’s top reputable boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for to determine whether your YSL bag is real or fake. Authentic Saint Laurent bags have a serial number tag. Authentic bags will have the tag sewn into the lining around the edges. The serial number is 12 digits separated by a dot. Newer versions of YSL bags will have a serial number that is three letters, followed by 10 digits and they’re separated by a dot. In addition, make sure to thoroughly examine the bag for flaws and imperfections. A true Yves Saint Laurent bag will be flawless. Shop a collection of authentic Saint Laurent purses from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To check the authenticity of a Bottega Veneta bag, first check for the serial number. The label should also read ‘originality certified’ on one side and ‘Made in Italy’ on the other side with the Bottega Veneta logo. Shop a collection of properly vetted Bottega Veneta bags from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, the boutique staff at Balenciaga stores and their retail partner stores are not trained to authenticate a Balenciaga bag. Always purchase Balenciaga bags from reputable sellers to ensure authenticity. Shop a large collection of Balenciaga bags from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022To tell if a Pierre Balmain vintage bag is authentic, first check the hardware. Balmain often stamped the brand name onto zipper pulls and fasteners. The lettering should appear crisp and evenly spaced. Balmain's tags changed greatly over time. Compare the ones in your bag to images of authenticated pieces available online.
