Hines Collective

Manhattan Space Odyssey

It’s just two years old, but the Hines Collective has already produced commissions that are as wildly adventurous as they are luxe. Take this far-out project in midtown Manhattan’s Museum Tower. “The unrenovated space was quite traditional,” says firm founder Devin Hines (second from right, with partners, from left, Natalia Ramirez, Kerry Offsey and Lindsey Reese), “the opposite of the clients’ style. They wanted a curated, bright environment with a nod to space-age sixties mod.” The team went the full monty, commissioning a seamless gloss-white resin floor for the entire apartment. For the dining area, they chose a pair of Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip chairs, outfitted with seat pads covered in Verner Panton’s iconic 1960 Geometri fabric. But the designers wanted the room to have a decidedly 21st-century spin, so they put those chairs in conversation with Mattia Bonetti’s 2009 mirror-polished stainless-steel Vortex dining table and Yard Sale’s 2013 Corsican chairs, masterfully hand-fashioned from more than 25 different hardwoods. “The Vortex table is the unsung hero of this room,” says Hines. “Its reflections connect the other pieces that orbit around it with a lightness akin to its name.”
