Miami Modern with a Twist

São Paulo–born and Manhattan-based, Andre Mellone crafts interiors that exude the earthy sensuality of Brazilian modernism and the New York City rigor he learned working at such design firms as Robert A. M. Stern and Mark Hampton. “We appreciate mid-century modern design but try to express it in a contemporary way,” he says. In this Miami living room, Mellone, who has created retail spaces for fashion powerhouses Thom Browne and The Row, maximized ocean-view seating with a custom Studio Mellone sectional, Tank chairs by Alvar Aalto and a low-profile 1960s Danish daybed by Bernhard Pedersen & Son. In choosing tables, Mellone indulged his taste for materiality and form: a Rimbert Sandholt side table with teak drawers, an Edward Wormley lamp table in wood and mosaic, an Angelo Mangiarotti elliptical marble console, a Philip and Kelvin Laverne bronze cocktail table and a solid-steel side table by Jake Szymanski sourced through 1stDibs. “The client wanted a room that was comfortable and cool but without any strong reference to whatever people might refer to as nautical or beach,” Mellone explains. Mission accomplished.
