Rusticity and Refinement in Notting Hill

Past and present live happily ever after in a townhouse in London’s storied Notting Hill, where the client sought to wed the formal elegance of a Victorian with the easy flow of today’s open-plan living. In the living room, Banda Design Studio founder Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi deployed streamlined bespoke sofas to anchor a decor that also incorporates an exquisite 18th-century verdure tapestry, rustic tables, a 1960s Swedish wingback armchair, contemporary rope stools and Paolo Moschino brass sconces. “Nature, with its balance of imperfection and beauty, informs the material choices,” says the London-based Mapelli Mozzi. The reclaimed-wood coffee table, as well as the antique iron martini tables and 1920s chestnut lamp table, sourced from 1stDibs, add an earthy solidity, which is balanced by the ethereal 20th-century Murano-glass chandelier. The result, Mapelli Mozzi says, is “a room that maintains a sense of gravitas without compromising comfort and seamlessly blends heritage and modernity to create a sense of home.”
