Luxe California Modernism

San Francisco–based 1stDibs 50 mainstay Nicole Hollis draws inspiration from the California coast, contemporary sculpture and the Japanese concept of ma (negative space). In the conservatory-like living room of a monumental Northern California home by architect Tom Kundig, Hollis explored “the serenity of minimalist design,” she says, “blending the severe lines of modern architecture with organic materials and sculptural furniture that balances elegance with restraint.” An enormous wool-and-silk Tai Ping rug sets the ground for a mix of mid-century classics — a 1950s wingback chair, a Widdicomb biomorphic coffee table attributed to T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings — and sumptuously upholstered contemporary pieces, including a Patrick Naggar sofa covered in a teal velvet as well as lounge chairs by Roman Thomas in alpaca bouclé. Hollis also referenced the space’s architectural materials in a patinated- and polished-bronze Contour table by Bodo Sperlein and an Eric Schmitt Bulb stool with a glass base. “This room exemplifies our ethos,” she says. “Minimal but never cold, luxurious but never ostentatious.”
