A Warm Reception in London

A connoisseur of first-edition design books, Brigitta Spinocchia Freund uses her well-stocked library to inform her material choices and conceptual approaches. The owners of a London home wanted a formal reception room that, the Spinocchia Freund founder says, “celebrated design as a collection, not just decoration.” So, she crafted a space in which her bespoke upholstery pieces and a modernist chandelier mingle with 20th-century design classics sourced from 1stDibs. She chose Charlotte Perriand’s Cansado table and Berger stools, she explains, “for their form and functionality,” placed a pair of 1950s Jacques Adnet armchairs to exhibit his “bold and refined mastery of leather and metal” and added Tobia Scarpa’s brass Foglio sconces for their “sculptural presence.” These distinctive designs “coexist seamlessly,” Spinocchia Freund notes, while the dialogue between vintage and custom-made furnishings helps root the room firmly in the present. She points to one of her favorite furnishings, a tailored sofa she created using archival fabric from Pierre Frey’s heritage house, Le Manach: “It introduces a historical reference that sits beautifully alongside the mid-century icons.”
