I am always observing, choosing to focus on the beauty in everything which surrounds me. As in life, I strive to take a “negative” and turn it into a positive.
I encountered the phenomenon of Jellyfish which wash up along the coast of Israel twice a year. My reaction to seeing some of the largest jellyfish I had ever seen, was contrary to the usual sound of squeamish shrieks. I found something graceful, in these still translucent creatures, which we usually avoid at all cost when immersed in their salt water habitat. In their lifeless state, on the Holy shores of Israel, I was attracted to the play of light on these translucent mysteries of nature, and I set my lens on them to share their beauty. Their story is my story. They had a wonderful life until suddenly something changed.
I am the daughter of Holocaust survivors and this has been a great influence on my life. I aspired to be an artist from a young age, but a survivor’s reality influenced me to search for practical applications. Following graduation with a BFA from Boston University, I joined Jasmine Advertising, specializing in Entertainment Portfolios, while simultaneously doing freelance photography for modelling portfolios.
In the early 1980’s, following a move to Canada, I designed album covers which led me to produce Rock & Roll, Reggae and Children’s Albums. Although I was very successful, I was searching.
In 1985 I moved to Taos, New Mexico, where I was enchanted by the unique light and the legendary artists, photographers and writers, whose energy could still be felt including Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Strand, and D. H. Lawrence. My heart felt alive in the high-altitude environment. The air, light and lore of New Mexico took hold of me. I opened a Bed & Breakfast “Casa de Milagros”, which became a meeting place for local artists. I began to promote Native American Artists as well as exhibiting my photography in a number of Taos Exhibitions. I was one of the few “Anglo” photographers who was allowed to photograph at the annual Taos Pueblo Pow-Pow’s and was intrigued by the unfamiliar customs. (In general, they did not permit to be photographed, especially by tourists)
Unexpectedly, in 1993 my life changed forever. I was honored to participate in a select tour with the New Mexico Council of Photography through the waterways between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Somehow, at the end of this tour after an unplanned detour through Greece, Rhodes and Cypress, I eventually wound up on the shores of Haifa for one of the most beautiful and inspirational sunrises I had ever seen. I travelled to Jerusalem and had an epiphany at the Western Wall. I was taken by the image of my own people praying at the wall, and busloads of tourists coming to see them. It was a parallel to what I saw, while having so much reverence for the ancient Native American Ceremonies of which I was privileged to photograph in New Mexico. Suddenly I had a new found appreciation for my own people’s way of life. My oxygen became the air of Jerusalem and I felt I could not live without it. The physical light that I loved in New Mexico, suddenly paled in comparison to the physical and spiritual light in Israel.
Ready to finally settle down, I was introduced to my husband, Ronny Vance who spent a lifetime in the record business and was the catalyst for many hit records by renowned musicians including Tupac Shakur, Eric Clapton, Gwen Stephanie, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Sembello. We moved to Israel in 1998, settled in Jerusalem and have adapted to our new way of observant life. Together, we put our common past behind us as we search for the bright future and beauty that lays before us; a mystical future that includes the ultimate gift of life, our son, born in 2003.
