Frequently Asked Questions

For how long can I place an item on hold for?

When you request a hold, you can specify the length of time you need to hold the item. Please note, hold time is at the seller's’ discretion, so an item may be placed on hold for a shorter amount of time than you requested. If your hold expires or is about to expire, and you need to renew or extend it, you can always contact the seller.

What happens after I request a hold?

Sellers generally respond promptly and agree to place an item on hold, especially if you provide information about how long you need to hold it and why. However, your request may be declined if the seller has other customers interested in the item.

If the seller accepts your request, you’ll receive an email alert, letting you know the item is on hold for you. When you view the item details page, you’ll see “On Hold” under the item name. Only you will have the ability to purchase it while on hold. Other customers will only see that it is on hold and will not be able to act on it.

My hold is about to expire but I need more time. What do I do?

Click 'Request More Info' to send the seller a message requesting an extension. They can extend the hold.

By placing a piece on hold for me, does the seller guarantee they won't sell it to any other customer?

When an item is on hold for you, no other customer can buy it on 1stdibs. Occasionally, situations may arise when the item becomes unavailable. In that case, the seller will let you know they ended your hold. Such cases are rare, but the best way to ensure you don’t miss out on an item is to complete your purchase as soon as possible.

Am I obligated to purchase a piece that I have on hold?

Sellers understand that holds don’t always result in a purchase. But remember that when holding an item, the seller is forgoing the chance to make the sale to another customer.

By only requesting holds when you’re serious about buying, and letting the seller know promptly if you no longer need it on hold, you help to ensure that sellers continue to honor hold requests. 1stdibs monitors usage of hold requests and may remove hold privileges in cases of abuse.

What should I do if I decide not to purchase the piece?

Contact the seller as soon as possible so that they can take the item off hold and offer it to other customers.

How do I know if an item on hold becomes available?

Contact the seller, expressing your interest in the item. They can then notify you if the item becomes available.
