Finding the Right seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

The American brand was established in 1988 by Stark, Leonard Kamhout and John Bowman. Today, Chrome Hearts is known for producing leather wear, jewelry, eyeglasses and accessories. Chrome Hearts is a brand that seems to be bucking the mainstream approach of creating fashion. Chrome Hearts’s approach is to make whatever they want for whomever they want and charge aspirational prices for each piece. Because the work is custom and there’s no way to know how many there will be, it’s creating a huge buzz. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic Chrome Hearts pieces from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
Richard Stark, Leonard Kamhout and John Bowman started Chrome Hearts. When the brand launched in 1988, Stark and Bowman worked out of a garage, producing leather goods out of high-quality materials. The company soon expanded into jewelry, and Kamhout, a master sterling silver jeweler, came onboard. The trio continued to work together until 1994, when Kamhout and Bowman exited the company. Find a wide variety of Chrome Hearts apparel, jewelry and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Chrome Hearts' style blends a few elements. The brand's use of crosses and ornate details draws inspiration from Gothic architecture and Baroque art and fashion. Chrome Hearts became popular largely due to the influence of musicians. A girlfriend of Steve Jones, a member of pioneering punk band the Sex Pistols, appeared in a film for which Chrome Hearts designed costumes, and Jones took a liking to the brand. He helped raise its profile by wearing its accessories and apparel, and other bands like Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe also contributed to the brand’s popularity. In 1992, Chrome Hearts won the CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year award; the win helped the brand expand beyond the hard rock and punk music scenes. Chrome Hearts became popular during the 1990s. Its success was largely owed to its association with punk and heavy metal music. Sex Pistols lead guitarist Steve Jones helped introduce the brand to the music scene by wearing Chrome Hearts apparel on stage in 1989. Members of Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe and other bands soon followed suit. Shop an assortment of Chrome Hearts pieces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024
Chrome Hearts jewelry is so expensive for a few reasons. One is that the jewelry maker uses fine materials like 22-karat gold and sterling silver to produce its pieces. Another is that all jewelry that bears the brand name undergoes a painstaking crafting process to ensure quality. The popularity of Chrome Hearts jewelry also makes demand for pieces high, contributing to the price points. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of Chrome Hearts jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 14, 2024
Chrome Hearts sunglasses are expensive for a couple of reasons. First, much of the brand's eyewear is created in American factories. There, some of the manufacturing process is carried out by hand. (Polishing the frames, for example, is a manual part of eyewear production at Chrome Hearts.) As a result, the labor costs for the company’s eyewear tend to be high. Also, the brand's sunglasses often feature pricey materials, including titanium metals, exotic woods and Zyl, a Japanese acetate. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Chrome Hearts sunglasses.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Chrome Hearts is a luxury brand.
