Snoopy Lamp
With an oblong black head that sits atop a tilting white marble base, the Snoopy lamp’s shape playfully brings to mind the snout of the canine main character in Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. The design, one of many innovative collaborations by the Italian brothers Achille (1918–2002) and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913–68), was introduced in 1967.
After graduating from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1944, Achille joined the urban planning, architecture and industrial design studio of his older brothers, Livio and Pier Giacomo. Although Livio left in 1952, the partnership between Achille and Pier Giacomo flourished until Pier Giacomo’s untimely death in 1968.
“I see around me a professional disease of taking everything too seriously,” Achille once stated. “One of my secrets is to joke all the time.” The brothers channeled that wit into objects that could bring some joy to everyday life. For instance, their 1962 Arco floor lamp, a mid-century modern classic, has a long stainless-steel stem angling off a Carrara marble base like a streetlight, offering the elevation of an overhead light without needing to drill into the ceiling. Their 1965 RR 126 stereo cabinet also instilled some spirit in its functionality, bearing an animal-like face with radio-control dials for eyes and speakers for ears. Each of these pieces displayed a timeless ingenuity for experimentation in design.
Designed for Italian lighting manufacturer FLOS as a table lamp, the Snoopy lamp, in its simplicity, manages to be both lighthearted and sophisticated as it updates the humble banker’s lamp. The large enamel reflector — which suggests the long nose of a beagle and features three cooling holes that recall the grip on a bowling ball — is balanced on a sculptural base made from fine Carrara marble topped with a thick glass disk.
About 40 years after its debut, a new version of the Snoopy lamp was introduced by FLOS in 2003, a year after Achille Castiglioni’s death at the age of 84 following a prolific design career. This revamp guarded the enduring design of the original — now preserved by the Achille Castiglioni Foundation — while adding updated lighting technology, such as replacing the original knob with a touch-sensor dimmer. In addition to the classic black, it was made available in other colors over the years. The cherished original design is in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
Achille Castiglioni
Milanese designer and architect Achille Castiglioni sought to inject personality into all of his work, and found deep inspiration in everyday objects. A legend of Italian mid-century modernism, he created iconic, universally loved table lamps, chairs and other lighting and furniture with his likeminded brothers during the postwar years.
There was the Snoopy lamp, which brings to mind the unmistakable Peanuts character, while the shape of a common street lamp inspired the design behind the Arco floor lamp. Elsewhere, the Toio floor lamp — a provocative fixture in any living room — was made with automotive parts as well as run-of-the-mill recreational gear.
Castiglioni studied the classics at Liceo Classico Giuseppe Parini, art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and finally architecture and design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. After graduating in 1944, Castiglioni began working with his brothers Pier Giacomo and Livio at the studio they cofounded with classmate Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Livio left to pursue lighting design and sound technology, leaving Achille and Pier Giacomo to continue to collaborate on various projects. One such design was the iconic Taraxacum hanging lamp for FLOS which featured a resin “cocoon” created with sprayed plastic polymers that protects its steel core and allows for the diffusion of light.
Castiglioni won Italy’s highest award for industrial design — the Compasso d’Oro — seven times, and the Museum of Modern Art was home to his first individual retrospective in the United States. Castiglioni later taught at the Polytechnic University of Turin and at Polytechnic in Milan.
Castiglioni’s designs remain timeless. Some of them can be found in Tokyo’s Living Design Center Ozone, the Triennale di Milano and the Hangaram Art Museum at the Seoul Arts Center.

$878 Sale Price69% Off - Carlo Nason Italy Murano White, Pink Chandelier, Pendant, LampBy Carlo NasonLocated in Valladolid, ESAmazing and Fantastic large chandelier-type lamp designed by Carlo Nason for the Venetian house Mazzega. It has a metal structure from which an infinity of white Murano glass discs hang with a salmon-colored circle, 26 cm in diameter. The Mazzega house was founded in the 40s as an artisan glass factory, evolving to become a benchmark in design and avant-garde. About Carlo Nason Italian designer Carlo Nason was born into a family of expert glassmakers in 1935 in Murano, Venice. His father, Vincenzo Nason, ran the renowned Nason Moretti glass company and opened a second glass company under the name Vincenzo Nason & C in 1941. From an early age, the young Nason was trained in the art of glassblowing, learning both the properties of the material and the craft techniques used in the molding and decoration of the glass. Nason's first designed objects date from 1959 and are included in a collection of mold-blown vases produced by V Nason & C. Today, they are in the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. Driven by his passion for design, especially clean geometric shapes, Nason decided in the 1960s to distance himself from his family's business, which specialized primarily in highly traditional ornate decorative objects. Nason redirected his focus to glass lighting design in a modernist language. Nason intended to produce his first individual designs in small batches himself, but soon his spirit of experimentation and innovation caught the eye of Murano glass lighting manufacturer A.V. Mazzega, and the company invited Nason to collaborate on new collections. The partnership lasted from 1965 through the 1980s and resulted in a variety of iconic lighting designs that remain in demand today. Parallel to the collaboration with A. V. Mazzega, Nason also...Category

Rooms We Love: 11 Splendid Living Rooms
Common wisdom used to declare the kitchen the hub of the house. These days, the living room seems to have assumed the role of domestic focal point. Unlike the Victorian parlor, stiffly furnished and reserved for guests, today’s living room is a central place for reading, conversation and, well, living, with furnishings that lend themselves to both casual lounging and elegant entertaining.
