Jolanta Johnsson
Sunrise over Fields

2015

About the Item

Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about this piece: "Sunrise drawings are popular. Drawing of sun rise is welcome to every room. The beginning of the day is worth to be depicted in a painting or in a drawing. View of sunrise over fields makes everyone happy. People and animals. It gives warmth and lights up the landscape. Then the fields take on intense colours. They form a jigsaw of geometric forms. This is particularly visible from above, where the sun shines. In the black and white drawing, the clear geometric divisions testify to the fact that we humans build landscapes. We build landscapes as if racing against nature. In fact, each landscape is built at the expense of the original one. We introduce our own order. We plant fields, and we grow crops. Our landscapes are created for a purpose. We have to feed ourselves. The fields – these stretches of monoculture crops introduce new beauty into the natural landscape, a sunrise easy drawing. Nature is always beautiful, even when its elements are arranged by the hand of man. And when sunrise over fields starts – the landscape made up of the geometric figures of the fields becomes more intense in its colours. The view from above is not so easily accessible. Travelling by plane offers the opportunity to see a mosaic of fields. The sun rises every day and illuminates them with its radiance. Sunrise is like the opening of a curtain in a theatre. The day begins. In my sketch book easy sunrise drawing is emerging. I dare to make sunrise drawing black and white. I hope that it will be followed by next sunrise images drawing. Everyone loves the sun and looks forward to it every morning."

This is how she writes about the drawing: "The sunset today is extraordinary. As the sun sets, its round disc descends towards the horizon to eventually disappear behind it completely. This is when it changes colors, which become more and more intense. This spectacle is always interesting, each time different. No two sunsets are the same. One day it was so beautiful that it inspired me to make this drawing. That day was today, so I titled it Sunset Today. It is a symbolic title. It acts as a kind of reminder – the sun will also be set today. Today is also the day to watch the sun wander over the horizon. Don’t miss it! When we are surrounded by trees, the horizon line is collapsed. As the sun sets, it hides in their branches. Then, for a moment, the trees look as if they are on fire embracing the fiery sun ball...
