Erté
Born Romain de Tirtoff (1892–1990) in St. Petersburg, Russia, to an aristocratic family, the artist known as Erté — a pseudonym derived from the French pronunciation of his initials — was a Renaissance man of the art and design world. He worked in graphic arts, interior design, fashion, jewelry and set design for the stage and silver screen, becoming a leader of the Art Deco style.
Moving to Paris in 1912, Erté worked as a fashion designer under couturier Paul Poiret before securing a job with Harper’s Bazaar as a cover artist. Over 22 years, Erté created more than 240 magazine covers alongside his ongoing work in fashion design. Extending his prolific career into theater sets, costumes, prints and lithographs, he became one of the most famous artists of the era. Erté’s style — a combination of the nature-inspired flourishes of Art Nouveau and bold, geometric linework — directly contributed to the birth of Art Deco, earning him the nickname “the Father of Art Deco.”
After a lull of creative production in the 1940s and 1950s, Erté reentered the public eye in the 1960s, when a renewed interest in Art Deco had taken shape. Creating colorful lithographs, bold serigraphs (silk-screen prints) and bronze sculptures, he contributed to a resurgence of the style in France and beyond. This late-life acclaim for his art led to exhibitions in museums and galleries all over the world as well as his first published monograph in 1970. That same year he was awarded the title of Chevalier du Mérite Artistique et Cultural and in 1976 was named Officier des Arts et Lettres by the French government. Today, Erté’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and LACMA in Los Angeles..

Limited edition Chris Whitty's Cat pendant by Grayson Perry The pendant is an exact replica of a larger piece the artist made, and it is cast in solid sterling silver with a 28" silver chain, with an oxidised finish. Hallmarked and gift boxed with a hand numbered edition card. Chain length: 28’’ Pendant width: 39mm Weight: 64g During lockdown, Grayson Perry, one of Britain's foremost artists, brought the nation together through art, helping them to unleash their creativity as part of his Channel 4 TV series made by Swan Films. Every week Grayson Perry hosted the show from his own studio, taking the country with him as he created his own new art works. Grayson and his wife Philippa talked to other famous artists and creatives about how they were spending their time in isolation and invited them to make their own works in response to this unprecedented crisis. Each week a different theme - portraits, animals, fantasy, view from my window, home, Britain - was explored. ‘When lockdown first started back in March my wife Philippa and I went for a walk around the deserted City of London one evening. We came back through Gough Square where Samuel Johnson’s house is and a sculpture of his cat Hodge. When I saw this small life-sized memorial to a pet I was inspired. I was thinking of London and its myths, like Dick Whittington whose cat has its own statue on Highgate Hill. Chris Whitty is the Chief Medical officer for England and Chief Advisor to the government during the crisis. He has become the face of the Covid pandemic...I was looking through sculptures of cats and one that really caught my eye was an Islamic...Category

Inspired by an original recording conducted by Igor Stravinsky and William Hogarth's series of eight paintings and engravings of the same name, Hockney began designing the set and costumes production of The Rake's Progress. Through his designs and the use of his now iconic cross-hatched etchings, he wanted to create a 20th century response to the opera and to Hogarth's 18th century idea. - Memento (Dr. Martin Luther King John F. Kennedy Malcolm X, Civil rights workersBy Kerry James MarshallLocated in New York, NYKerry James Marshall Memento, 1997 Featuring civil rights leaders: Dr. Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Medger Evers, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, Malcolm X, Black Panthers 6-Color lithograph with gold powder on soft white Somerset paper with deckled edges Pencil signed, titled and numbered 6/33 on the front Frame included: elegantly floated and framed in a handmade museum frame with UV plexiglass This is an excellent impression of a scarce and consequential 1997 Kerry James Marshall graphic work printed by Master Printer Ross Zirkle (1955-2007) at Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico (the publisher). Other examples of this work are in major public institutions such as SFMOMA, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress - which is why Memento is so elusive and rarely found on the market. The present example is elegantly floated and framed in a white wood hand made museum frame with UV Optium Acrylic glazing - the highest quality. Measurements: Framed: 33 inches vertical by 47 inches horizontal by 2 inches Artwork: 30 inches vertical by 44 inches horizontal Bibliography: Pamela Franks and Robert E. Steele, Embodied: Black Identities in American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery, exh. cat. (New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Art Gallery, 2010), 62, ill. Text from the Yale University Art Gallery website: Kerry James Marshall’s Memento memorializes the persons associated with the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. The work depicts multiple headshots of civic leaders and other individuals who died during this era, such as Medger Evers and members of the Black Panther Party. Rather than drawing these images, Marshall uses the newspaper obituary photographs that the general public is accustomed to seeing. He exalts the fallen individuals by placing angel wings behind most of the images. A black woman carrying an urn of flowers stands before portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and John F. Kennedy. The woman turns toward the viewer, asking us, and the larger community, to “mourn” with her. And from the Birmingham Alabama Art...Category
