About the Item
Monica DeSalvo’s “Acceleration” is an 11 x 11 inch abstract collage with irregular edges on flecked felt paper. Bold negative spaces fortify a layered structure with pink, red, dark purple, and blue monotype fragments, botanical elements, and chairs. Textures vary with ripped paper from a spiral notebook, speckled paint splatter, and overlapping transparent colors. The work was inspired by architectural structures and churches piled high on jagged rocks on the Greek island of Skopelos.
DeSalvo’s abstraction becomes surreal with imagery such as the two upside-down chairs descending from the top of the heap while a third sits upright on the bottom border occupied by a serviceman sitting crossed-legged. This image comes from a textbook once belonging to DeSalvo’s late father. DeSalvo regularly incorporates her father’s paper memorabilia into her work as well as monotypes printed on these materials. The image is in a black metal 11 x 11 x 0.825 inch frame with glass. The title and signature are written below the image.

Monica DeSalvo
DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist blending drawing, printmaking, painting, and design. Her recent work explores and draws inspiration from her late father’s dementia and the journey she found herself on while caregiving. By using collage, she is able to perform “duets” with her father by incorporating his paper memorabilia. In August 2021 DeSalvo was one of eight artists selected from over 60 applicants featured in the Attleboro Arts Museum’s annual juried exhibition "8 Visions." DeSalvo is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
