Albert Stadler
Moving On, Landscape Abstract

1964

About the Item

Albert Stadler was an innovator in American art, particularly in the 1960's. He was in Clement Greenberg's exhibition of 1964 titled "Post Painterly Abstraction" held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center and the Art Gallery of Toronto. This is important as the avant-garde artists of this time were divided by whether they were championed by Greenberg or Harold Rosenberg. This is a great exploration of post-painterly work mid 60's and he is also engaging on Color Field work. Interesting to compare his approach to that of Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler. This work while it is minimalist in nature is also full of content and has a landscape narrative. It is great for room with a long wall or a spot over a sofa. It opens up a vista and yet can be appreciated for its visually striking bands of color. IMPORTANT to note that the frame on this painting is new and is a 22 karat gold float frame as in our image it shows a bit as white which is misleading. It is reflecting light in the photography and the sides are black lacquer. we will be uploading images of this detail. Also its a big long canvas and we note under condition that there are some light striation undulation to the canvas when viewed from the side or an angle. Light can pick up on this but it also hangs and looks fine . Often large or long canvases can have this. Inside the frame the canvas measures 26 x 83 1/2.

  • Condition:
There are light striations in the canvas, viewed from an angle and in some raking light. Hanging this is not visually evident. These striations are due to the length of canvas and we feel it does require a reline. Straight on this is not obvious.

Our shaped canvas which also is a sculptural form in essence for a wall, is a geometric play of optical illusion. Hinman is an important pioneer of exploration in the contemporary world, away from the idea of the “square” and flat canvas. He is linked to such artists as Robert Indiana, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselman and he pre-dated Frank Stella’s exploration of canvas as wall relief structures...

(framed) Please note: Our framing studio could not accommodate the scale of this work, so it is being sold as-acquired. The canvas is housed in an original “studio strip” frame installed by the artist. Please see condition notes below for additional details and an assessment of condition. Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...
