Alfred de Breanski Sr.
A Suffolk Landscape with Ferryman

About the Item

Alfred de Breanski, Sr. (British) is one of the most renowned 19th century landscape artists, known for his plein art style, both realistic and idyllic. Breanski set up his easel across the Scottish Highlands, Wales and rural England as in this gem, titled 'A Suffolk Landscape with Ferryman'. Born in England with an early gift for painting, Breanski's work is sought after for its fine detail, color and beautiful landscape scenery. His son and brother both were also fine artists, as was his wife, Welsh artist Annie Roberts. This painting comes with provenance from a US art gallery, sold in 1990. Signed and dated faintly in right lower corner, probably 1885. Windmills were common across the UK and Europe. The water reflections, skies and distant church and cattle frame the Ferryman and his boat. This Victorian impressionistic painting is presented in a likely period frame, in overall very good condition. Mounted on heavy board. There is no sign of previous restoration. Sight size 10" by 21", and 15" by 27" with the frame. Great price for this artist! Ready to hang!

  • Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder
    By JD Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water...

  • The River in October, Scotland circa 1900
    By Joseph Morris Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
'The River in October' is a lovely impressionist rendering of Scottish autumn color by Joseph Morris Henderson, (1863-1936). Early in his career Henderson exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Kelvingrove gallery and in galleries and museums in the UK and abroad. Paintings by JM Henderson remain popular and collectible today. Provenance verso shows this painting was a gift to John Stewart, Architect. JM Henderson is Glaswegian, born in Glasgow and died in Glasgow. He grew up in a family of artists. Two brothers and his father Joseph Henderson were all known artists of the period. Henderson studied art in the Glasgow School of Art, and graduated from Glasgow University. Henderson excelled in Scottish landscapes, many in the softer colors of the countryside, rivers, seascapes and lochs. In contrast to the mountainous Highlands he found exceptional beauty in local scenery, farms, waters, and figures in the rural landscape. 'The River, October' is in oil paint on canvas, clearly signed lower right. It is presented in the likely original period gilded frame in good condition. The painting is in very fine condition with no noted faults or past restoration. The colors and brushstrokes are clear and distinct. Collected by Saltire Gallerie, 'The River, October' was imported from Scotland to the USA. It is now ready for your very special place! Henderson was closely connected with the Glasgow Art Club, and was a member of the Committee of Management of the Paisley Art...
