About the Item
Impressionist oil painting of arching trees, titled 'Path Through Willow Trees, Summer' is by Sir James Lawton Wingate (1846-1924), President of the Royal Scottish Academy and knighted for his contribution to art. Known for landscapes, Wingate turned increasingly to impressionism in his later career. This work signifies that change with impressionistic light and almost abstract sections of color over the arching willows above the path with figures of two girls in the corner.
Sir Charles James Lawton Wingate was born at Kelvinhaugh near Glasgow in 1846. He began work while still a boy as a clerk. However, he was up early in the morning to take drawing lessons before reporting to work. From pencil studies, he constructed watercolour drawings which he exhibited for the first time , age 18, at the Glasgow Fine Art Institute. After this successful exhibition, he left work as a clerk in order to study art full time. He traveled to Italy, and began painting plein air. During two years in Italy he produced some 150 watercolor paintings. After his return to Scotland he based himself in Hamilton for about five years. Later he moved to Edinburgh where he was admitted to study at the Royal Scottish Academy.
Wingate exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1865, and from the Royal Academy in London from 1880. His work has been exhibited by the Fine Art Society, Bond Street in London (with a label from the Society verso). His work is represented in the Scottish National Galleries.
Wingate was influenced by Scottish artist Hugh Cameron and later in Edinburgh (from 1913), William MacTaggart. In Edinburgh his style and brush strokes became more free and less tied to strict representation of nature.
This painting of the willows is a good example of this later style, free and impressionistic. For that reason this work of Willows was probably done in his later career. It was in this later period that WIngate was elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy (1919).
'Path Through the WIllows' is in excellent condition in a wooden frame, with a label of framers Bourlet and Sons, Nassau Street London W1 saying it was framed for the Fine Art Society, verso. The painting is signed by WIngate in the lower right corner.
Lightly cleaned and imported by Saltire Gallerie.

As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water.
