The Trossachs, Scotland

early 20th century

About the Item

Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art painting. De Breanski,, like his father, exhibited in the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists and was a successful and well-regarded artist of his time. This painting is recognizable as The Trossachs, with a signature that resembles that of Alfred de Breanski, Jnr more than his father. We invite you to examine it closely in the photos. The frame and canvas are of the period, early to mid 20th century. The Trossachs canvas is nearly 20" high and 29.5' wide, that, combined with the gilt frame and lining is 28.5" high and 38.5" wide. There are imperfections over the frame, and an area of minor damage to the frame, as photographed. The painting itself is presented in excellent condition. The provenance is not proven, so this painting is offered at a price well below what would be expected for a fine work by Alfred de Breanski, Jnr. Further investigation may settle the issue, and Saltire Gallerie is open to further research that may result in a change of value. This work of art presents beautifully, and is ready to be hung on your wall! Acquired and imported by Saltire Gallerie.

  • Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder
    By JD Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water...

  • The River in October, Scotland circa 1900
    By Joseph Morris Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
'The River in October' is a lovely impressionist rendering of Scottish autumn color by Joseph Morris Henderson, (1863-1936). Early in his career Henderson exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Kelvingrove gallery and in galleries and museums in the UK and abroad. Paintings by JM Henderson remain popular and collectible today. Provenance verso shows this painting was a gift to John Stewart, Architect. JM Henderson is Glaswegian, born in Glasgow and died in Glasgow. He grew up in a family of artists. Two brothers and his father Joseph Henderson were all known artists of the period. Henderson studied art in the Glasgow School of Art, and graduated from Glasgow University. Henderson excelled in Scottish landscapes, many in the softer colors of the countryside, rivers, seascapes and lochs. In contrast to the mountainous Highlands he found exceptional beauty in local scenery, farms, waters, and figures in the rural landscape. 'The River, October' is in oil paint on canvas, clearly signed lower right. It is presented in the likely original period gilded frame in good condition. The painting is in very fine condition with no noted faults or past restoration. The colors and brushstrokes are clear and distinct. Collected by Saltire Gallerie, 'The River, October' was imported from Scotland to the USA. It is now ready for your very special place! Henderson was closely connected with the Glasgow Art Club, and was a member of the Committee of Management of the Paisley Art...

  • "Solebury Valley"
    By William Langson Lathrop
    Located in Lambertville, NJ
Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
