'The River in October' is a lovely impressionist rendering of Scottish autumn color by Joseph Morris Henderson, (1863-1936). Early in his career Henderson exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Kelvingrove gallery and in galleries and museums in the UK and abroad. Paintings by JM Henderson remain popular and collectible today. Provenance verso shows this painting was a gift to John Stewart, Architect. JM Henderson is Glaswegian, born in Glasgow and died in Glasgow. He grew up in a family of artists. Two brothers and his father Joseph Henderson were all known artists of the period. Henderson studied art in the Glasgow School of Art, and graduated from Glasgow University. Henderson excelled in Scottish landscapes, many in the softer colors of the countryside, rivers, seascapes and lochs. In contrast to the mountainous Highlands he found exceptional beauty in local scenery, farms, waters, and figures in the rural landscape. 'The River, October' is in oil paint on canvas, clearly signed lower right. It is presented in the likely original period gilded frame in good condition. Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888.
