About the Item
'Harvest Time' with Croft and Haystacks Impressionist oil on canvas painting is by popular Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson, RSA (1863-1936) known for Landscapes and Seascapes. Henderson exhibited in the London Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, and in galleries across the UK. This painting is especially bright, of golden fields and haystacks, and impressionist figures by a rural white croft house overlooking a river, woodland and hills. Thick white paint flecks reflect the light against the rich gold and gray blue skies.
Born in a family of artists from Glasgow, Henderson studied at Glasgow University and joined his father, brother and sister as artists. His sister married the Scottish artist MacTaggart. The 19th century Scottish landscape tradition is deeply embedded in his work, but Henderson delves into impressionist light and color, and his impression of figures in the field. He makes good use of perspective in this painting, along with his sparks of white.
Saltire Gallerie currently has three original paintings by Henderson, all in gilded frames of similar size, and all with autumn color. All three came from private collections in Scotland, imported by Saltire Gallerie to the USA.
'Harvest Time' is in a likely original gilded frame, in excellent condition. The artist signature, J. Morris Henderson, is in the lower left. This painting is a good size: 22" high by 30" wide, and the frame is 3" deep. The canvas is 13.5" by 20.5".
Overall the painting and frame are in very good condition. Ready to hang!
