George Augustus Williams
George Augustus Williams was born on 4 May 1814 in Marylebone, London, into the Williams family of artists. His father was Edward Williams (1781–1855) a landscape painter and patriarch of the Barnes School of artists. He was one of six sons, who all became artists, Edward Charles Williams (1807–81), Henry John Boddington (1811–65), Arthur Gilbert (1819–95), Sidney Richard Percy (1821–86) and Alfred Walter Williams (1824–1905). Williams and all of his brothers were tutored by their father. He married Caroline Smith in 1835 and one of their sons Walter Williams (1834–1906) also became an artist. He initially lived with his family in Liverpool Street, Grays Inn Road, London before moving to Barnes, where he worked out of neighboring studios with his father, brothers and later his son and nephews. This working arrangement gave rise to Williams's family becoming known as the Barnes School. Like his father, he painted landscapes but specialized in river scenes of the Thames as well as seascapes and views of Kent and Wales. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1841 and also at Suffolk Street and the British Institution. Williams died in Barnes on 26 May 1901. His gravestone can be found at Barnes Old Cemetery.

- 19th Century continental townscape oil painting of a busy harbourBy Ludwig HermannLocated in Moreton-In-Marsh, GloucestershireLudwig Hermann German, (1812-1881) A Bustling Harbour Town Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863 Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour. Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850). Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...Category

- 19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland sheep at Glen CoeBy William WatsonLocated in Moreton-In-Marsh, GloucestershireWilliam Watson Jnr British, (1847-1921) Morning, Head of Glen Coe Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1897, further inscribed verso Image size: 12.5 inches x 18.5 inches Size including frame: 19.75 inches x 25.75 inches A superb Scottish landscape painting of Highland Sheep at the head of Glen Coe by William Watson. The sheep and their lambs are depicted grazing in the morning light with the dramatic mountains beyond. Glen Coe is a valley located in the Highlands to the North of the county of Argyll and close to the province of Lochaber. The area, which became infamous for the Massacre of Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most scenic Highland glens. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...Category
