Gertrude Baskerville
Grand Tour Landscapes, 19th Century Signed Travel Watercolour

About the Item

Watercolour on paper, each signed, entitled and dated '1873' on mount Image size: 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (21 x 14 cm) Period frames £330 each Please note that there is a slight variation in size. The gallery has eight framed paintings by the artist, illustrating her travels around Europe in 1873. She was one of six children, like many young people of her time she went on the Grand Tour with her chaperone, in this case her aunt. On this tour we have this astonishing record of watercolours that she executed while travelling the south of France. The Grand Tour of Europe became increasingly popular among women in the late 18th century and early 19th century. For British upper-class young women travelling Europe was part of formal education as well as a form of entrance into elite society. When published, women’s letters and travel diaries about their experiences provided entertainment and vicarious travel for a less elite audience. These artworks are titled ' From the Grissback Hotel, May 26th', 'Lake Near Carqueyrames, Feb 25th', 'Dolce Acqua, Mentone, May 12th', 'View from the Hotel des Iles d'or Hyeres, April 7th', 'Snow Mountains, Bernese Oberland, June 2nd' and 'On the Way to St Tropez, March 31st'. The Artist Gertrude Alice Elizabeth Mynors-Baskerville was born at Cleirwy Court in Wales. Arthur Conan Doyle was a close family friend who often came to stay at the hall. During his many visits he learnt of the local legend of the hounds stalking nearby Hergest Ridge. He was inspired by the rumour and incorporated it into the fifth (and perhaps most famous) outing of his keen eyed, hawked nosed detective, Sherlock Holmes. However, at the request of his friends, the Baskervilles, he set the book in Devon "to ward off tourists".

  • Pea Soup, Port of London, Watercolour 20th Century Painting
    Located in London, GB
Watercolour and gouache on paper, signed lower left Image size: 8 x 12 inches (20 x 30.5 cm) Original frame This painting effectively displays the atmospheric problems that London struggled with during the artist's lifetime. When most homes relied on coal fires and industry too derived much of its power from coal, 'pea-soupers' were a regular occurrence. As the fog closed in totally obscuring ones vision, the smog was so thick that much of London descended into grey. Fog persisted well into the 20th century. Indeed, in TS Eliot...

  • The Pool of London
    By Norman Wilkinson
    Located in London, GB
Signed and dated '1902' lower right Contemporary style hand made frame Provenance: Tryon Gallery Private collection In this painting we can we Blackfriars Bridge in the background reaching across the River Thames with smoke billowing up into the sky behind. On the far right the unmistakable, and instantly recognisable, silhouette of St Pauls also breaks the sky line of the city. Finished in the early 18th Century, St Pauls has been a noticeable addition to the London cityscape ever since. This work by Wilkinson depicts 'The Pool' of London, a stretch of the River Thames from London Bridge to below Limehouse. As part of the Tideway of the Thames, the Pool was navigable by tall-masted vessels bringing coastal and oversea goods to the wharves that originally made up the Port of London. In 1909 the Pool came under the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority. The docks here thrived until the late 1950s, despite suffering from extreme bomb damage during the Second World War. The tall-masted ships that Wilkinson has depicted here are perfect examples of traditionally rigged sailing craft of the time. They differ from modern sailing vessels in that they did not use newer materials (such as aluminium and steel) and have more complex rigging as a result. The term tall ship later came into widespread use in the mid-20th century with the advent of Tall Ships' races. Here, incredible attention to detail has been applied by Wilkinson in the accurate depiction of the various ships rigging...
