About the Item

A wall of rose bushes in front of a house beautifully painted by Charlotta (Lotten) Sofia Rönquist (1864-1912). It is an oil on panel, signed L Rönquist and dated 1905. The measurements given are without frame. Lotten Rönquist was a Swedish painter and her production includes images from both Sweden and the continent. She studied at Eve Rodhe's school in Uddevalla and then at the Technical School in Stockholm 1880–84 and later at the Royal Fine Arts Academy in Stockholm 1884–1890. Among the fellow students at the Academy were Gottfrid Kallstenius, Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius, Anton Genberg, Anshelm Schultzberg, Carl Johansson, Verner Åkerman, Carl Flodman, Carolina Benedicks-Bruce, Ida Gisiko-Spärck, Hanna Pauli and Hilma af Klint. In the late 1890s and early 1900´s, at least until 1907, Lotten Rönquist shared a studio with Hilma af Klint and Alma Arnell in the so-called "Ateljébyggnaden" (Studio Building), which the Royal Fine Arts Academy owned. The property was the cultural center of Stockholm at the time. The same building also housed Blanch's Café and Blanch's art salon, where the battle took place between the Royal The Art Academy's conventional view of art and the Artists' Association's French-inspired opposition movement. After her time at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, she studied in France. During 1892, she worked in the artists' colony Grèz-sur-Loing where also comrades such as Gottfrid Kallstenius, Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius, Waldemar Nyström, Carolina Benedicks-Bruce and William Blair Bruce stayed at the time. After her time in France, Rönquist traveled to Italy where she worked and studied for five years. She painted miniature portraits, interiors, landscapes and still lifes. During her last fifteen years of life, she executed several monumental paintings for hotels, castles and churches. At the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, there are a number of large paintings preserved in the so-called Winter Garden. Rönquist was a member of the Swedish Artists' Association, in whose exhibitions she participated ten times from 1886. She also participated in exhibitions organized by the Artists' Association for Southern Sweden. In 1912 she suffered a severe flu, after which she died of pneumonia. Rönquist was then only 48 years old and in full career. A memorial exhibition was held at Salon Joël in Stockholm in 1912. Lotten Rönquist is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg artmuseum and many others.

A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Made sketch drawings at the free academies Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière and in 1927 he met the Swedish artist Erik Olson...
