Southern Landscape Oil Painting Hudson River School
Located in Fredericksburg, VA
Copyright 2023 Michael F. Meyer All rights Reserved. This painting, signed RSD on right side, has been verified by the late expert on Robert S. Duncanson, Joseph Ketner and comes with an authentication letter. This painting has exhibited and is published in Robert S. Duncanson and His Courageous Southern Travels. This painting is one of the many beautiful southern landscape scenes that Robert S. Duncanson painted in his courageous travels south. "Robert S. Duncanson born in 1819, was an African American Hudson River School artist who painted the south before the Civil War, until his death in 1872. Although widely famous during his lifetime, this forgotten artist’s courageous journey through the antebellum south has never before been exhibited or researched until now. His brilliance was in creating captivating landscape paintings that come alive to the viewer, by focusing on the minute details of nature and of the stories he wished to communicate. Théophile Clément BLANCHARD - Landscape in Normandy
Located in PARIS, FR
Théophile Clément BLANCHARD 1820 - 1849 Oil on canvas 27 x 40 cm (45 x 58 cm with the frame) Signed lower right "Blanchard" Very nice 19th century gilded wooden frame French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s. Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art. Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle. This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...

Visiting Day at the US Life Saving Service
By Xanthus Russell Smith
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Although suggesting a yacht or boating club due to its prime waterfront location, this panoramic view by Philadelphia artist Xanthus Smith, most likely shows a US Lifesaving Service facility in one of the mid-Atlantic states. Originating in the mid-1800’s, the U.S. Lifesaving Service’s earliest buildings were strictly utilitarian, but as the Service grew, so did the size of the stations. By the 1880s, they were becoming more fashionable and usually were made up of two or three structures as shown here. The main building contained the offices and berthing area for the crew and usually featured a lookout tower on the roof. Smaller buildings housed classrooms and medical facilities. Some were built to resemble a Swiss chalet and one was even designed with a clock tower. Noted architect A. B. Bibb designed stations like this one that looked much like beach resort homes with lookout towers. The stations were usually located near the approaches to major ports and were maintained by the United States Revenue Marine (later renamed the United States Revenue Cutter...

Dutch Winter landscape with children playing on the ice by Per Wickenberg, 1839
Located in Stockholm, SE
Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century. He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years. After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837. In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske". Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details. Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold. In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality. This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting. Artist: Per (Pehr) Wickenberg (1812-1846) Swedish Title: Dutch Winter landscape with children...

Located in New York, NY
John Frederick Kensett White House and Trees, circa 1853 Oil and gouache on paper 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches Provenance: Estate of Vincent Colyer (1824 - 1888) By descent Paul Magriel Collection Private Collection, Long Island Exhibited: New York, The Finch College Museum of Art; Southampton, New York, The Parrish Art Museum; New Orleans, Louisiana, Isaac Delgado Museum of Art; Norfolk, Virginia, Norfolk Museum of Art; Montclair, New Jersey, Montclair Art Museum; New London, Connecticut, Lyman Allyn Museum; Manchester, New Hampshire, The Currier Gallery of Art; Providence, Rhode Island, Rhode Island School of Design; Youngstown, Ohio, The Butler Institute of American Art, American Drawings (Benjamin West to the present) from the Paul Magriel Collection, June 1961 - December 1962. Portland, Oregon, Portland Art Museum, April 14 - May 15, 1963. Boston International Fine Art Show at the Cyclorama, Lincoln Glenn, October 19 - 23, 2022. In the 1850s through 1860, John Frederick Kensett, painted a series of at least five landscapes of the "Shrewsbury River" (now the Navesink River) along the New Jersey shore. Art historians have described Kensett’s paintings of the river as having evolved from a trip in the fall of 1853 at the invitation of Kensett's friend, author and lecturer George Curtis. However, letters viewable at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art website make it clear that Kensett had become acquainted with the area over a year earlier, most likely in connection with fellow artist and friend Thomas Prichard Rossiter. Kensett and Rossiter had been friends since at least the 1830s. As aspiring artists, they had traveled to Europe together in the 1840s. In 1851 Rossiter married Anna Ehrick Parmly, then in her early 20s, and Kensett attended the wedding. Anna was one of four daughters of Eleazer and Anna Maria Parmly. Eleazer, one of the major figures in American dentistry history, was a wealthy and accomplished member of New York society. When not in the city, the Parmly family gathered at Bingham Place, a sprawling estate on 275 pastoral acres spanning the peninsula between the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers along the New Jersey shore. The Bingham Place estate encompassed much of what is now Rumson, then known as Oceanic, N.J. It was a wide-open landscape of ocean views, orchards, lawns, and cattle-dotted pastures. There the Parmlys opened their doors to family, friends, and the summer breeze. Rossiter, newly-married into the Parmly family, was likely the reason that Kensett paid a social visit to Bingham Place in the summer of 1852. On July 11, 1852, having reluctantly departed, Kensett wrote Rossiter who was still at Bingham Place: New York to me now is that of a deserted place…marking a dismal contrast to the green lawns at Bingham Place. I saw the receding shores of Shrewsbury & the line of dust which marked your homeward course & finally the last glimpse of the Locust trees that shade the pleasant mansion & happy inmates at Bingham with any thing but a joyous spirit. A major figure in the American luminist tradition and one of the most renowned painters of the Civil War era, John Frederick Kensett was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1816. He was the son of Thomas Kensett, a British immigrant engraver, and it was in his father's New Haven firm that Kensett first learned to draw. After mastering the rudiments of the graphic arts, he worked as an engraver in print shops in New Haven, Albany, and New York throughout the 1830's. During this period, he began to paint on his own, encouraged by a friend and fellow artist, John W. Casilear. In 1838, he made his first submission, a landscape, to the annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design. Desirous of continuing his training, Kensett traveled to Europe in 1840. For the next seven years, often in the company of artists such as Casilear and Asher B...

The Brigantine E. MILLER
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
This luminous work depicts the American merchant brigantine E. MILLER. The sun sits low behind the ship, illuminating the sky with colors of yellow and deep rose tones. The sun has just touched the sea at the ship's bow and around her stern, creating a halo of light in the small waves. The E. Miller is in full sail with sailors active on her deck, with her brightly colored name pennant snapping in the wind alongside the American flag and company flag. Though unsigned, this is clearly the work of artist Elisha Tyler Baker. Baker only signed about a third of his paintings, so this is not unusual for the artist. The rendering of the vessel to his touch in the sea and sky all give very clear clues that the work is his. Though little information remains about her voyages we know the ship E. MILLER was built in Virginia by the Surry Company in 1856 and had a weight of 132 tons. Sailing out of Richmond she was also known to frequent the port of Baltimore. From Richmond she would have carried out agricultural goods, lumber, and iron, while importing manufactured goods and guano to fertilize Virginia's tobacco fields. Given that she was built before the Civil War and was ported in Richmond throughout the war, it's likely the E. MILLER was involved in moving goods to supply Confederate forces.
