Art Deco Oil Paining Nude with Rose

1930s

About the Item

A classic Art Deco Nude Oil Painting of a woman holding a single rose that projects beauty and serenity. A reclining nude is the essence of what is pure and natural yet also desirable and forbidden. Nude images are universal and timeless, yet the small details that let us know when it was created capture our attention. The blurred, abstracted background, in contrast with the intense detail of the model’s features and the textured pink rose she holds, is a technique often used in the 1930s. The model’s hairstyle… swept up and rolled in the front but long and loose in the back, is another hint of the time period. In those years, there was a popular fascination with the shape of a woman’s face (something that is hardly,if ever, mentioned today), but as faces were described as round, oval, or square…a “heart shape” was considered especially attractive and that is visible in the way her face has been rendered. For the past 15 years, I've been a 1stDibs Furniture dealer with Platinum status. We've always sold fine art on this “furniture" platform and have recently started selling our Art Deco Fine Art here on 1stDibs in addition to our Furniture platform. The work is signed and was purchased in Belgium, but the name is not easy to read, and our research has not yet told us anything about the artist. The value is in the style, the technique, and the age of the painting, which is well-framed and beautifully executed.

  • The Lady of the Cliffs, 1927. Nude Clifftop Sunbathing. French Arts Décoratifs.
    Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the French artist Raymond Moritz and dates from 1927. The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs), mounted with new fixtures. The canvas and the painted surface have benefitted from cleaning and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This vintage painting is now in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower left. A later dedication to “Louise” dated April 1942 in the artist’s hand is set around the earlier signing. Raymond Moritz was a French impressionist artist and illustrator. He was born in Paris on 8 July 1891. His family came from the Alsace region and were poor and Catholic. On his mother’s side, the Staubs were from Wihr-au-Val where they had been coopers for several generations. His uncle, Marie Clement Staub, was the founder in Canada of the Sisters of Saint Joan of Arc. Moritz fought during the Great War in the Picardy region of the Somme with the 2nd machine gunner company. He won the French 1914-1918 War medal with bronze palm attachment, which signifies that the awardee was mentioned in dispatches at army level. Moritz obviously created some art during the war because during the inauguration of the new town hall in the town of Albert he was congratulated by the French President, Albert Lebrun, and the British press for the paintings he had produced. Albert was the main town behind the lines for the Allies on the Somme battle fields...
