About the Item

Limited edition silver gelatin print' shot on true infrared film at Point Lobos (in Carmel, CA) in December 2012, printed 2013 and later. Processed in D-19 and printed by me on Foma Fomatone MG. I also did a little selective bleaching before toning in selenium, for archival purposes. Handmade print from my "Awakenings: Point Lobos & Beyond series." #3/15 (15 prints/edition) This limited edition silver gelatin print is part of my ongoing "Awakenings: Point Lobos & Beyond" series. [This is a long-term/location-specific series.] I am drawn to desolate land and seascapes. For me, making images is a meditation of sorts, a search for truth. Further, the darkroom is where I learn about the subconscious aspect of my images. All of my photographs are essentially self-portraits; the more I print, the more I start to see the part of me that was unconsciously exposed, and that revelation is largely what my work is about. This translates particularly well with IR film, which seems to turn the world inside out; I also appreciate its unique ability to expose what the naked eye cannot see. [I have been specializing in IR for decades; My love affair with this medium began in 2001, upon "discovering" the work of Minor White, as a student. I made my first infrared landscape series that very same year; prior to that I was actually a street photographer. Or rather I thought I was, as I fell into photography by accident (while studying upper division buddhism and taoism, as a philosophy student) in 1998, and joined the photography program the following year. [I have a BFA in photography and minor in philosophy.]
