About the Item
Edition of 6.
Alex Prager creates highly staged, theatrical, and cinematic photographs inspired by a wide range of references and influences—street photography, classic Hollywood cinema, and experimental films. She is keenly aware of the ways Hollywood has created the seemingly fantastical ability to fabricate and depict any scene, event, or time period one can imagine.
Her images, a moment frozen in time, hint toward a larger narrative that allows the viewer to speculate about what happened just before (or just after) the moment portrayed. Prager evokes a voyeuristic quality in her work, and her viewer becomes acutely aware of their role as a witness to a potentially private moment or event.
This work is part of Prager’s 'La Grande Sortie' series, which tells the story of a prima ballerina struggling against stage fright. This body of work explores the role performance plays in the construction of personal and universal identity and questions the relationship between performer/audience, artist/viewer, and realism/fantasy. Here, Prager has subtly interspersed mannequins throughout the audience creating a surreal and somewhat terrifying juxtaposition between actor and stage prop—again playing in the space between reality and fiction.

Alex Prager
Influenced by pulp fiction and cinematic tropes, self-taught photographer and film-maker Alex Prager creates striking, sometimes unnerving images that are filled with a dynamic cast of characters. The hyperreal worlds she creates are packed with human melodrama, like the retro 'damsel in distress' character that regularly makes appearances in Prager's brightly colored and dramatically lit scenes. With influences ranging from David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Gregory Crewdson, Prager references the vivid aesthetics of mid-twentieth century American cinema and photography. Pairing photographs alongside her films as part of her practice, Prager presents an eerie, alternative world where more questions are asked than answered.
