Carlos Antonini
Vaso Antico (Urn)

1781-1790

About the Item

CARLOS ANTONINI Manuale di Vari Ornamenti Rome, 1781-1790 Engraving. 100 Illustrations. Late eighteenth-century Europe was a world in revolution. People in France were losing their heads to Louis XVI and England had a mad king named George. But the quest for history continued even as it was being made. Archaeological discovery, although under Royal control, remained an open field. The sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii were haphazardly excavated and pilfered by amateur archeologists and thieves. Much was lost or destroyed. Fortunately, many of these magnificent vases, painted figures, bronzes, and marbles have been preserved in collections of published engravings. Passeri of Rome, Hamilton of England, and David of Paris each contributed folios devoted to the illustration of these classical antiquities. Their influence in design is evidenced in furniture, porcelain, fabrics, and paintings throughout the succeeding centuries. Ironically, many of the greatest objects were taken from the sites and would become the property of foreign countries. This remains the subject of argument to this day.
