Georges Braque
Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque

1958

About the Item

Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 is the image Braque designed for the cover of a book containing five poems by René Char in homage to Braque himself. In the lower left of the image lies a stylized black bird, a common pictorial motif in Braque’s oeuvre. Both the bird and the disembodied head to the left of the composition are facing to the right, which would have been in the direction of the cover’s opening. The parallel directionality of the bird and the head create a sense of movement and drama that emphasizes what lies within the pages of the book. Such interplay between the bird and head attests to the compositional balance repeatedly found in Braque’s work. Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 represents a beautiful collaboration between the visual arts and poetry. Created in 1958, Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 is a color lithograph on Japon nacre.
