Irving Guyer
Irving Guyer, Sleepers

1936-39

About the Item

Classic American Depression-Era subject meets the French landscape? Clearly the Guyer was looking at both Jean-Francois Millet and Vincent Van Gogh, who together informed this image. And are those Monet's haystacks? And is Guyer reminding us that times are terrible and that work can be exhausting? Actually this print has it all: sleeping field workers (a couple?), a distant vista, a skilled etching technique, and a WPA stamp to boot! Made in NYC in the middle of the 1930s. It is signed and titled in pencil. The WPA stamp is in the lower left margin. NYC-WPA editions were 25 impressions. The dimensions are tricky. The image is 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches but the image leaves about 1/2 inches between the edge of the etching and the plate. The plate is actually 8 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches. An impression of this subject is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, NY.
