"Dos Personajes Atacado Per Perros", Rufino Tamayo, Mixographia, 61x98, Modern

1983

About the Item

"Dos Personajes Atacado Per Perros" by Rufino Tamayo is a Figurative Abstraction Mixographia on amate paper measuring 61x98 in. The piece is sandwiched between two pieces of plexiglass to keep the mixograph safe. Rufino Tamayo, Dos personajes atacados per perros is a Mixograph made in 1983 and is the largest mixograph of its time. It is signed by the artist in the lower right and numbered in the lower left. This is HC VI/VII apart from the edition of 75 plus 7 artist proofs. In the catalogue Raisonne the piece is published and printed on handmade paper at the Taller de Grafica Mexicana, Mexico City. Tamayo’s view of modernity required an escape from the limitations of nationalism and a search for cosmic meaning, addressing “social” problems in a more universal way. The modern social revolution in art embraced post-war abstract expressionist and surreal tendencies with the incorporation of primitive-style imagery. Tamayo’s works were an abstraction of human and animal forms, based on architectural and geometric shapes and a primitive sense of proportion and scale, such as in Two People Attacked by Dogs, a colossal Mixograph on Amate paper. Reminiscent of the violence and tragedy of Picasso’s Guernica (1937), it also portrays animals as a symbol of war and destruction. Two figures—one male and one female—are being chased by a pair of vicious dogs. This is a metaphor for how humanity is hunted by its own bestiality, fear, and evil, in the never-ending search for humanism within a cosmic perspective of the world.

    By Mimmo Paladino
    Located in Ljubljana, SI
Original color woodcut, 1992. Edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Mimmo Paladino is an Italian contemporary sculptor, painter, muralist and printmaker. He attended the Liceo Artistico di Benvenuto (Benevento Art School) from 1964 to 1968, when minimalism and conceptualism dominated the international art scene, which had effects on his art. He was also a part of Transavantgarde – the artistic movement with the neo-expressionist resurgence that swept through Italy in the 1980s. Paladino seeks his inspiration from both the ancient and the modern – from Egyptian, tribal, and classical artworks to the modern painting and sculpture. In his compositions we can often see a figure in combination with the signs like crosses, and techniques like the application of gold leaves, a symbol of eternity, borrowed from Christian iconography, as well as the hieratic pose of Byzantine figures and the gestural quality of that culture’s rites. Paladino himself admits to being “an artist of the south, but of the darkest, most mysterious south, and this is why I find poetic sensations that belong to me in certain aspects of Nordic culture, why I can make a totally black painting...
