Keith Haring, who famously declared that “art is for everybody,” started designing posters in 1982, while he was still a student at the School of Visual Arts. Haring was drawn to posters because they were a democratic medium—a great way to share his bright designs and kinetic characters in visible public display. Haring also used posters as a means for social activism, spreading awareness about the crack epidemic in the United States, apartheid in South Africa, global nuclear disarmament, right-wing politics and the devastation of AIDS. More on Refuse & Resist! Refuse & Resist! was a human rights activist group founded in New York City in 1987 by activists who were concerned that the American government, epitomized by U.S. President Ronald Reagan, advocated a far right-wing political program directed against the political rights of its people. Artist Keith Haring created R&R!'s logo in 1988. The organization's national office was located in New York City, with chapters spread across more than 10 US cities. The organization officially dissolved in 2006. At that time, the national office closed, and the organization's files transferred to the Tamiment Library at New York University. On the Palladium Palladium was built as a deluxe movie theater by movie mogul William Fox in 1927. Beginning in 1971 it was also utilized as a concert venue, then later converted into a nightclub in 1985 by Steve Rubell of Studio 54.

Avedon captured his staged subjects on black-and-white film, sometimes in motion. He turned his probing, intimate gaze on both everyday civilians and cultural icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Malcolm X. Avedon served as a photographer in the military before working as both a freelancer and staff photographer for publications including Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, The New Yorker, Life, and others. While he is widely known for his commercial and editorial practices, Avedon also exhibited widely in cities including New York, Paris, and London. Throughout his lifetime, he published a number of books of collected photography. On the secondary market, Avedon’s work has sold in excess of $1 million. Related Categories Richard Avedon Beatles.
