About the Item

Haystack #5 Color lithograph and screen print, 1969 Signed and dated in pencil (see photo) From: Haystack Series (seven plates) see photo of entire portfolio Signed and dated in pencil Edition: 100 (74/100) Publisher: Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, CA, with their blaindstamp Reference: Paul Bianchini No. 33e Corlett and Fine 69 Condition: Excellent Fresh colors Small paper imperfection in bottom margin near the edge of the sheet Image size: 13 1/4 x 23 3/8 inches Sheet size: 20 ¾ x 30 ¾ inches Frame size: 23 ½ x 33 ¾ inches This is one of the finest images in the portfolio, inspired by Claude Monet's famous series of Haystack paintings created in the early 1890's. In 1968–9 Lichtenstein made a series of paintings paraphrasing Claude Monet's ‘Haystacks’ and ‘Rouen Cathedral’ paintings (1891 and 94). He made prints on this theme at Gemini in 1969: the series of seven ‘Haystacks’ runs from morning (yellow) to midnight (black, with embossing) in a mechanical version of Monet's changing light effects. An impression of this image is in the collections of: Tate, London Art Institute of Chicago Walker Art Museum, Minneapolis National Gallery of Art, Washington Museum of Modern Art, New York Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City
