EXHIBITIONS Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, September 1997 (another example exhibited) LITERATURE Corlett, Mary Lee. “309 Interior with Chair.” The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné 1948-1997. New York: Hudson Hills Press, 2002. NOTES Interior with Chair was created in celebration of Leo Castelli’s 90th Birthday and the 40th Anniversary of Leo Castelli’s New York Gallery, which showcased work from some of the most prominent artists of the day. The print was first commissioned by Castelli’s son, Jean-Cristophe, and published in Leo Castelli’s 90th Birthday Portfolio as part of an edition of 90 that marked each year of Castelli’s long life. It was published alongside a powerhouse of other artists’ work including: Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha and Richard Serra. The print itself references Roy Lichtenstein’s 1990’s series, Interiors, that reproduced various advertisements from the Yellow Pages. Each image was enlarged in scale, traced onto museum board, collage elements were added, and then finally reworked in Lichtenstein’s signature pop art style. Interior with Chair characteristically emphasizes the Ben-Day dot printing method in opposition to what could be deemed as the high art of oil on canvas. Likewise, the artist’s stencil-like design reduces each element to its purest form - highlighting color and line within the picture plane. Considering both its stylistic method and commissioning, Interior with Chair is a perfect example of Lichtenstein’s success in bringing mainstream culture to the elite gallery scene.

  • Skulls, 1976 (#157)
    By Andy Warhol
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Skulls (FS.II.157) is a screenprint on paper with an image size of 30 x 40 inches, signed 'Andy Warhol' and annotated lower left. From the edition of 60, numbered 36/50 (there were also 10 APs), and framed in a custom, closed-corner, gold-leaf frame. Catalogue - Feldman Schellmann, #157 (II.157 Skulls 1976) Andy Warhol’s Skulls from 1976 are part of the transition he began initially in 1972 with the Mao series – incorporating hand-drawn lines into the image – and with Ladies and Gentlemen and Mick Jagger in 1975 where he began the print process with his own photographs rather than appropriated ones. Additionally, in the 1975 prints, he began using collaged elements – torn paper, photographic elements, etc. Donna de Salvo writes about the Skulls series, “Skulls (II.157 – 160) lies somewhere between the genres of still life and portraiture and is based on a photograph of a skull taken by Warhol’s studio assistant, Ronnie Cutrone. The theme of skulls became a major preoccupation for Warhol, and he produced numerous versions of it in paintings. In this image, Warhol combined all three pictorial forms...
