Roy Lichtenstein
Before the Mirror, from Mirror of the Mind

1975

About the Item

Roy Lichtenstein Before the Mirror, from Mirror of the Mind, 1975 poignantly encapsulates the artists ability to engage with referential pop-culture symbols while interweaving art historical practices to develop a unique style that captures the imagination and places it a realistic context. Depicting a still life work glass with a lemon behind, Lichtenstein pushes the boundary of classical interpretations and provides the viewer with a work that arrests your attention with parallel bold diagonal lines, crisp colors, and harsh contrasts. Using vertical lines of yellow and blue, Lichtenstein uses colors to highlight the reflections of light that bounce off the glass, globular forms of black detailing the half-filled line of water. Using the same lines of color, the artist masterfully illustrates the reflection of a mirror placed behind the objects, their reflections delineated with repeating lines and color that are consistent motifs in his oeuvre. Created in 1975, Roy Lichtenstein Before the Mirror, from Mirror of the Mind is a woodcut and lithograph on Arches 88 paper. This work is hand signed and dated by Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 – New York, 1997) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower right margin.
