Charles Lutz
THE INCORRUPTIBLE, Stainless Steel Yacht / Boat Christening Bottle Sculpture

2014

About the Item

THE INCORRUPTIBLE Polished stainless steel. 12 X 3.75" (30.5 x 9.5 cm) Edition of 5 2014 THE INCORRUPTIBLE is an important example of Lutz's Christening Series, a grouping of paintings and sculptures which focuses on the creation of value. Christening bottles, often wrapped in festive netting or ribbon, were used at elaborate events to celebrate the launching of a war ship, yacht, boat, or other vessel. Ticker tape parades, speeches, and flowers framed a prominent female whose honor it was to smash the christening bottle against the bow of the ship before it is launched into the water for the first time. Value and the transference of value are reoccurring themes in Lutz's work and in the Christening series, Lutz employs utilitarian materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, and raw linen to convey functionality and strength with the value of cost and purpose. The result is hyper realism and elegant simplicity which display Lutz's mastery of materials, texture, and color. Lutz has been exhibited and done major projects with The New Museum, New York, NY, The Armory Show, New York, NY, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Artipelag Museum, Stockholm Sweden amongst others. Lutz lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. * This is a stainless steel cast sculpture and does not contain alcohol

  • Concorde Cap, Electroplated Copper Contemporary Art Sculpture by Shelter Serra
    By Shelter Serra
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Concorde Cap Shelter Serra 5.5”x7”x9” Electroplated Copper 2017 The Concorde Cap is one of an ongoing series of copper electroplated hats. Ranging from Superman to Nascar, the artist chooses hats from all walks of life before distilling through the electroplating process, transforming the once functional hat into an object of contemplation and beauty. Shelter Serra’s sculptures and drawings explore notions of mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes objects that are both mundane and immediately recognizable: a 40 ounce bottle of malt liquor cast in plaster, a Best Buy cap plated in copper, and a designer handbag cast in resin, to name a few. Casting and plating these objects in unlikely materials—resin, plaster, platinum silicone, and copper—Serra strips them of their intended functionality, thereby highlighting their underlying cultural symbolism and transforming branded products into objects of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.” His Fake Gun...
