The story behind Balenciaga begins with Cristóbal Balenciaga.

As a child in the quiet fishing village of Getaria in Spain's Basque region, he worked alongside his seamstress mother. Showing immense talent, he earned commissions as a teenager from local patron Marquesa de Casa Torres, who paid for his tailoring education in Madrid.

In 1917, Balenciaga established his first fashion house, named Eisa, for his mother, in the trendy resort town of San Sebastián. He soon followed it with boutiques in Madrid and Barcelona, drawing such clientele as the Spanish royal family. When the Spanish Civil War put a hold on his prospects in Spain, the designer moved to Paris, opening a house on Avenue Georges V in 1937.

Balenciaga continued designing until 1968, when he retired after three decades of influential work and his fashion house went dormant. The rights to Balenciaga were acquired by Jacques Bogart SA in 1986. Under designer Michel Goma, who focused on ready-to-wear, the brand experienced a resurgence, with his first collection introduced in 1987.

Find a large selection of Balenciaga apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.

The story behind the Japanese cat traces back to ancient folklore. In the tale, a cat saves the life of a samurai who turns out to be quite wealthy. To show his thanks, the man made a very generous donation to the temple. In Japanese culture, cat sculptures and figurines are symbols of good luck and known as “maneki-neko.” Find a range of Japanese decorative objects on 1stDibs.

The difference between a drape and a curtain is that drapes are long enough to reach the floor, typically, and are lined with material that is specifically intended to keep out light. Curtains might be short — covering half a window in the kitchen, for example — and while the curtains in your bedroom might keep out some sunlight, they won’t keep out all of it. Drapes are usually made with heavier fabrics such as velvet or a similar material, while curtains usually feature lightweight and sometimes sheer fabrics. Find a collection of antique and vintage drapes and curtains on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023
Yes, you can use curtains as a room divider. To do so, you will need to mount hanging hardware on the ceiling. One of the biggest benefits of using curtains to divide rooms is that they are easy to maneuver when you want to open up a space or close off an area. Shop a range of curtains on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A curtain rod and a drapery rod are both made to suspend fabric that would be used for a window treatment. The only difference between the two structures is that curtain rods are thinner since they are designed to support less weight — as curtains are made of lighter fabrics — while drapery rods are more durable and rugged since they are intended to support the weight of drapes, which are comparatively heavier and lengthier. Wood and metal are the most popular materials for these rods. Find an assortment of curtain and drapery rods on 1stDibs.

Many colors of curtains go with a gray couch. As a neutral color, gray can coordinate with many hues. You can keep to the neutral theme by choosing curtains in gray, ivory, beige, taupe, cream or off-white. For a more colorful approach, dress up your windows with curtains in blue, green, yellow or red. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of curtains.
