Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry is so special because of the storied house’s focus on technical virtuosity, craftsmanship and artistry. Rather than create earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other adornments primarily for the aim of displaying wealth and opulence, Van Cleef & Arpels sought to produce jewelry that projected the wearer’s taste and style. Born from a union of expertise in both jewelry making and gem selection, the jewelry house distinguishes itself with both the consistency of the color and clarity of its stones. The creativity of its designs and its unique innovations also make this luxury brand distinctive. In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented its trademark Mystery Setting, a technique by which gems are fitted into an intricate matrix of slots and “drawers” that keep the setting hidden. But as much as to the firm’s craftsmanship, clients have been drawn by the insouciance and playfulness of Van Cleef & Arpels designers, as well as their attunement to the cultural climate. Shop a selection of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry on 1stDibs.

No, van Gogh was not an Impressionist. Due to the time when he was active and the style that he favored, the Dutch artist is generally thought of as a Postimpressionist. However, Impressionists such as Claude Monet influenced his work. Shop a collection of Postimpressionist art from some of the world's top galleries and dealers on 1stDibs.

Van Gogh lived in several places over the course of his life. Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands, in 1853. Before becoming an artist, he worked as an art dealer in London, UK, and as a missionary in Belgium. Then, in 1886, he moved to Paris, where he met avant-garde artists Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard and became inspired to begin painting. By 1888, van Gogh had grown weary of Paris and decided to relocate to Arles, France. While living there, he produced many of his most famous works, including Café Terrace at Night and the Sunflowers series. After a brief stay in a psychiatric hospital, van Gogh moved to Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise in May 1890, and he died there two months later. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of fine art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
Van Gogh was influenced by a number of artists. Impressionist painter Claude Monet and fellow Postimpressionist Paul Cézanne both inspired the Dutch artist. He also drew inspiration from the works of Dutch and Flemish masters like Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt as well as from the emotions conveyed in paintings by Jean-François Millet and Eugène Delacroix. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Vincent van Gogh art.

No one knows for sure what van Gogh's first painting was. However, historians have identified three works from 1881, any of which might have been the first Vincent van Gogh ever produced. What the flower is on Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry varies. Artisans at the luxury jewelry house have drawn inspiration from several types of flowers over time, including roses, chrysanthemums, peonies and daisies. Floral designs are frequently set with gemstones at their center and feature glittering pavé petals. After the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the company produced several lavish pieces featuring hieroglyphics and other Egyptian motifs to go along with the geometric Art Deco jewelry of that decade and the next. Following World War II, as symbols of freedom and rebirth, the firm focused on naturalistic forms such as birds, flowers, fruit and flying insects. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

A few things are special about Van Cleef & Arpels. The French luxury jewelry maker is noted for its longstanding focus on technical virtuosity, artisanship and artistry. The maker is also known for its innovative designs. In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented its trademark Mystery Setting, a technique by which gems are fitted into an intricate matrix of slots and "drawers" that keep the setting hidden. Another innovation was the Zip necklace, introduced in 1951, which can be worn either around the neck or, with the zipper closed, as a bracelet. Clients have also been drawn by the elegance and playfulness of Van Cleef & Arpels designers, as well as their attunement to the cultural climate. John Russell is the artist who painted Vincent van Gogh. An Australian native, Russell got to know van Gogh while visiting the studio of another French artist, Fernand Cormon.
