By the Beach, Oil on Canvas Painting by André Hambourg
By André Hambourg
Located in Atlanta, GA
This elegant oil on mounted canvas is by André Hambourg (France, 1909-1999) and features a seaside composition. The artwork is signed in the bottom left corner. The landscape is a lovely pastel color composition, by the beach, on the French Atlantic coast nearby Cabourg or Deauville. Newly framed with a gray and green ceruse wood frame and a blue canvas matte. Measurements: With frame: 22.82 in. wide (58 cm) x 19.32 in. high (49 cm). Opening: 16.13 in. wide (41 cm) x 12.63 in. high (32 cm). About: André Hambourg was born in Paris on 5 May 1909. Entering the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in 1926, he studied sculpture under Paul Niclausse for four years. The young artist then entered the studio of Lucien Simon at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. While in the middle of his academic studies, Hambourg had his debut solo exhibition at the Galerie Taureau in Paris in 1928. He was only 19 years old. Because of the early recognition of his talent, Hambourg became active in major Paris salons in the first stages of his fledgling career. In 1931, he was made a member of the Salon de l’Art Français Indépendant and the Salon de l’Oeuvre Unique. The first of Hambourg’s many honors was the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif, awarded in 1933. As a result, the artist traveled to North Africa for the first time and spent nearly ten years working in Algeria and Morocco. The strong light of the sun, and the bleak poverty of this region, inspired Hambourg’s works. In 1937, he executed a large mural for the Algerian Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale of Paris. Throughout his years in North Africa, Hambourg would exhibit his paintings in numerous solo exhibitions in Algeria and Paris. In 1939, Hambourg was mobilized as a military reporter and draughtsman and worked on the staff of the Journal de Commissariat a la Guerre, the newspaper of the French army, under the pseudonym Andre Hache. Special missions on combat vessels led to his appointment as a war correspondent in 1944 with the staff of inter-allied SHAEF. As such, he participated in the campaigns of Germany, Alsace, the Atlantic front, and the Liberation of France. After returning to his artistic career for a short time, Hambourg became the official painter of the Navy in 1952. He undertook numerous voyages aboard French Navy vessels on missions worldwide, including Venice, the Soviet Union, Israel, Great Britain, The Ivory Coast, The United States, and Mexico. From these extended trips, the artist brought back numerous sketches and preparatory drawings for future paintings and illustrations. His international trips would have a lasting influence on his artwork. Hambourg’s adventurous maritime career resulted in his receiving the honor of Laureate of the Salon de la Marine and becoming the official painter of the Marine Ministry. In 1970, five hundred of his works created a prestigious retrospective at the Maison de Culture in Bourges, France. Other notable shows include Drawings of Venice...

"Denizens, #7" black & white photography - travel - highway - portrait
By Beth Lilly
Located in Atlanta, GA
This listing is for a framed print. Simple white frame measuring 17 by 23 inches. Edition of 10. Additional sizes available. Beth Lilly is inspired by the work of Thomas Cole, JMW Turner and Paul Gauguin. Atlanta-based photographer Beth Lilly utilizes a variety of photographic styles in her conceptually driven projects that speculate on the interplay of choice, chance and circumstance. Her most recent series, “The Seventh Bardo,” documents interstate-goers, who on their journey from point A to B, seemingly step outside the confines of time and space, getting lost in contemplation and introspection. In Tibetan, the term ‘Bardo’ literally means ‘the space in-between,’ like a liminal space, and usually refers to the state between death and rebirth. She finds a long journey on the interstate to be a kind of bardo, a state rich with opportunity for transformation. The landscapes and the portraits in this series can stand alone, but are intended to relate and inform each other. The landscapes contain both blurred and sharp elements, signaling that these images are not about a specific geographical place but a psychological place. Nondescript features in the landscape repeat themselves endlessly – this is a limbo that extends forever but goes nowhere. Instead, they serve to set the emotional and psychological stage, and foster a sense of a dreamy otherworldliness “We live in a time when individuality is highly praised, and yet many of us have never been so lonely,” states Beth. “Cars travel the interstate side by side, just feet apart, yet the passengers experience complete isolation. Our windowed vehicles create the illusion of privacy and within these small worlds, people tune out the outside world and appear deep in self-reflection or absorbed in the dramas of life playing out within the small world of their car.” Beth’s portraits record these transitional moments of being lost in thought or the brief moment of connection when they curiously look back at her. Beth earned her MFA in Photography from Georgia State...

"Topo" - Contemporary Abstract Painting - colorful - aerial landscape - gold
By Kate Hooray Osmond
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Topo" is an abstract landscape painting featuring blue and green hues. Kate Hooray Osmond is inspired by the work of Hilma af Klint and Damien Hirst. “My series of paintings deal with sensation and ultra-color,” Kate explains. “I am considering the concepts of over-consciousness, Horror Vacui and the overlap between joy and terror. In visual art, “horror vacui” (from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia (from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail. For this series titled “Gold,” each piece is influenced by a topic of consideration: technology, super-nature, genetics, pharmaceuticals, perception. As Kate studies and meditates on these subjects, her path of investigation grows more and more intense until she teeters between becoming overwhelmed by fear for our future and a euphoria filled with hope and intention. “I feel so much life that I am paralyzed by it, and I am confounded by how sensation and numbness can blend together,” says Kate. “All that glitters is Gold.” Born in 1983, Kate Hooray Osmond earned her MFA in Studio Art from...

This painting features hues of blue and purple. Memphis-based painter, Susan Maakestad is attracted to the spaces between things, the unnoticed marginal spaces in the urban landscape. A Moment of Grace
Located in ATLANTA, GA
I was born in Atlanta, Ga. in i948 and have always lived in the South. The rich tradition of storytelling is in my blood and it is impossible to ignore its influence on my narrative paintings.I am the director of my own tale and must create the characters, the setting, and the poetic tensions implied between the characters and the viewer. My paintings are done on canvas or museum board in a realistic manner with much attention to detail. I have created a technique of layering oil paints and varnish that give the surface a unique technical aspect, one that visually reflects the many levels at which the narrative can be interpreted. The paintings begin with the seed of an idea and a strong fascination and empathy for the central character. One can rely on conscious judgements concerning composition, whether to paint the figure nude or elaborately costumed ,and the use of one's own personal symbols and icons. I believe that only when the artist moves into uncertain territory and listens to her own private language, can she move beyond mere painting. Artist Statement C.Dawn Davis

Kerry James Marshall Banner Authentic Mastry Exhibition
By Kerry James Marshall
Located in Draper, UT
Mastry 2017 Exhibition Banner Actual Banner Prominently Displayed in Downtown LA Throughout a career spanning four decades, Kerry James Marshall has continuously interrogated and addressed the omission of black individuals from the Western art-historical canon. Across painting and a variety of different media, his complex and multilayered portrayals synthesize disparate genres, while seeking to counter stereotypical representations. As Lanka Tattersall notes, "Marshall's determination to mark the historical absence of black bodies in the Western canon of painting and his emphatic, programmatic insertion of blackness into the field of art are carried through the literal matter—the pigments—of his paintings."1 Marshall was born in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama. He studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, earning his B.F.A. in 1978 and an honorary doctorate in 1999. In 2014, Marshall joined David Zwirner...

The ink stamp at the back read: "Wide World Photos - The New York Times S.A. - 106 rue Réaumur, 100 - Paris - Tel: GUT 65-46 or 65-47 - Adr. Télég: TIMWIT-PARIS". About: Le Petit Casino, at 12 Boulevard Montmartre, is a show restaurant built in 1893 on the former site of the Oriental Bazaar and the Séraphin Theater. It closed its doors in 1948. On the left side of the photograph, you can see the front of La Maxeville brasserie-restaurant. La Grande Maxéville was founded in 1901. The architect Joachim Richard (1869-1960) designed the new Grande Maxéville. His son-in-law, Georges Roehrich, designed an establishment in a pure "Art Deco" style. Imagine the rooms covered with engraved mirrors, one story high - including the ceiling and we'll get a little idea of what this superb restaurant was like. Elves were dancing in swarms, on the blinds, on the walls, and on the ceiling. They symbolized the Parisian party and the joy of living and brought an undeniable touch of fantasy to this place. The "Grands Boulevards" at that time were still flourishing. Luxury shops were spreading out there. A nighttime activity allowed the restaurants to fill up very often. The theaters, including that of the variety show located on the opposite sidewalk, attracted a share of the clientele. During the day, people would come and sip a drink while listening to the orchestra. Many famous artists performed as "guest stars" at La Maxéville. The Grands Boulevards and mainly the Boulevard Montmartre have always been one of the centers of Paris, which exert the most attraction with tourists, Provincials, and Parisians. It is indeed the central artery of the capital. Many varied shops, cafes, restaurants, and shows throng the famous Boulevard. As soon as night falls, one by one, the signs light up, the facades light...

What's the Matter Tonight? Diptych, 2018
Located in ATLANTA, GA
I was born in 1972 in Chartres. I live and work near Orleans. After having taken courses at the Beaux Arts in Orléans in drawing of live models, sculpture and painting, I decided to devote myself entirely to painting. Education ARTISTIC APPROACH: When the day fades, the truth appears in the light of the twilight. The whole being, invaded by the padded silence of the advancing night, sees his humanity bend under the awakening of his senses. He becomes again more instinctive, more animal, more true in the beauty of his solitude ... and the return to nature that the twilight imposes, then sends him back an exact image of himself. It is this transformation that Ben Pastre...
