Billy Schenck Art
American, b. 1947
Billy Schenck has been known internationally for 44 years as one of the originators of the contemporary 'Pop' western art movement. He is an American painter who incorporates techniques from Photo-Realism with a Pop Art sensibility to both exalt and poke fun at images of the West.
Schenck has had over 100 solo shows. His work is in the permanent collections of 48 museums and important private and corporate collections.
Museum collections include the Smithsonian, Mesa Southwest Museum, The Tucson Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Midland TX, Albuquerque Fine Arts Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art. Private collections include the estate of Malcolm Forbes, Steve Forbes, Chris Evert, Elaine Horwitch, Louis Meisel, Martina Navratilova, Laurance Rockefeller, Fritz Scholder and Sylvester Stallone. Corporate collections include: American Airlines, I.B.M., Raymond James Financial, Wells Fargo Bank, Hilton Hotels, Sturm Ruger and The National Bank of Switzerland.
“What has remained constant throughout Schenck’s career is his individuality in dealing with the subject matter of the west. Using the artistic formula of classic western film direction and the photographically reliant systems of contemporary art, he has bridged two genres that resonate with the American experience. From early depictions of cinematic cowboys to real-life cowboys and cowgirls to poetic reveries about the Native American existence in the Southwest, Schenck melds the real with the imagined, autobiography with fantasy.” -Julie Sasse, Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Tucson Museum of Art.(Biography provided by Bruce Kapson Gallery)

"Love Wild" - Contemporary Pop Surrealist Portrait with Cute Odd Little Monster
By Natasha Lelenco
Located in FISTERRA, ES
"In 'Love Wild,' Natasha Lelenco engages in a playful and stylistic exploration with clear references to the recurring portraits of the early Renaissance, such as those by Giorgione, from a contemporary perspective and with the technical precision that characterizes her work. In this piece, she presents a character with a certain sexual ambiguity, lost in thought, snuggled up with a small creature, a little monster, and sporting tattoos on the fingers that read 'Love' and 'Wild,' a nod to Charles Laughton's famous film 'The Night of the Hunter...

"Advance of Western Civilization"
Oil on Canvas
36 x 42 in. Framed
Billy Schenck utilizes specific frames of reference in his oil on canvas depictions of the American West, establishing visual links between notable moments of American and film history, along with the history of visual modes of production. Stark contrasts, use of pattern, vivid hues, and a pop sensibility imbibe the work with a contemporary edge, while taking on some of the most popular tropes of Hollywood’s film industry. Frequent motifs in Schenck’s work include heroes, villains, the seductive femme fatale, as well as alluring imagery of Native American figures, frequently juxtaposed with subversive text or a winking acquiescence via visual symbols or motifs. Schenck sources his imagery from both personal references as well as historical sources such as newspapers and other print media tying his personal narratives to those that came before.
One of the originators of the Western pop art movement, Billy Schenck incorporates techniques from photorealism with a pop art sensibility to both exalt and poke fun at images of the West. Schenck is known for utilizing cinematic imagery reproduced in a flattened, reductive style, where colors are displayed side-by-side rather than blended or shadowed.
Schenck’s artwork is now in 48 museum collections, including Smithsonian Institution, Denver Art Museum, Autry Museum of the American West, Booth Western Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, the Mesa Southwest Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Midland TX, Albuquerque Fine Arts Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art. Private collections include the estate of Malcolm Forbes, Laurance Rockefeller, the estate of Fritz Scholder, and Sylvester Stallone. Corporate collections include American Airlines, IBM and Sony.
A genuine cowboy himself, Schenck is a ranch-sorting world champion and the proprietor of the Double Standard Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his home for the past two decades.
"47 years ago I left the Kansas City Art Institute with a B.F.A. in Painting. One week later I was in New York City to begin the launch of my career as an artist. I had no clue as to what that meant specifically - It was, however, the right move. I began making paintings based on black and white movie stills...
