Esther Mahlangu Art

b. 1935

Esther Mahlangu is a South African artist from the Ndebele nation. She learned mural painting from her mother and grandmother at a young age, following the Ndebele cultural tradition of women painting the exteriors of buildings in their communities as an expression of identity. Her paintings reflect the Ndebele culture with both their bold, vibrant colors and geometric patterns, which are often influenced by Ndebele clothing and jewelry designs. A particularly fascinating component of Mahlangu's artistic practice is her ability to create precise geometric lines on a large scale without any preparatory studies or guides. She often paints with chicken feathers, per Ndebele custom. Mahlangu is interested in preserving her cultural tradition and teaches art to children in Weltevrede, a town in Mpumalanga Province, to this day. She became internationally known when she exhibited at the landmark 1989 Magiciens de la Terre exhibition of African art at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Mahlangu has received many international commissions for her art, including partnerships with BMW and Fiac, and her works are in the collections of museums across the world, notably two large-scale murals flanking the entrance to the African Art Gallery in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The Goddess Kali Appears to a Hunter - Balinese Ubud Painting Mask Dance
Located in Soquel, CA
Incredibly detailed depiction of the goddess Kali appearing before a hunter by Konci (Balinese, 20th Century). Overflowing with details and imagery, this piece depicts the goddess Kali in the forest along with other godlike figures. A hunter is kneeling before them, wearing a quiver, and with hands folded in prayer. Kali is depicted in a traditional Balinese style, but with a multitude of faces engulfed in flames. The jungle background is full of swirling plants. Signed "Konci" in the lower right corner. Cloth wrapped around wood panel. Unframed. Image size: 35"H x 25.5"W This carved, wooden mask represents the mythical creature known in Bali as Banaspati Raja, meaning “King of the Forest,” also called the Barong Ket. Lion-like masks such as this one are the most common type, but Barong can take on the features of a number of different animals, including wild boar, dog, deer, and tiger, individually or in composite form. In Balinese society, all Barong masks...

One of South Africa’s most renowned artists, Esther Mahlangu paints vibrant geometric works based on traditional Ndebele designs. Growing up in the Ndebele community, she honed her linework while painting houses —customarily a woman’s task. Mahlangu’s iconic abstractions drew international attention after her inclusion in the Centre Pompidou’s 1989 group exhibition “Magiciens de la Terre (Magicians of the Earth),” where she painted a replica of her house in front of visitors. Two years later, she was the first woman and the first African artist to be commissioned to paint a BMW Art...
