The classroom - Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1792-1883)
By Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder
Located in Gent, BE
Oil on panel Signed and dated lower left: "Ferdinand de Braekeleer, 1868, Antwerp." This depiction of a classroom clearly shows the typical style of De Braekeleer. One can read the painting as one reads a story. The viewer's gaze can wander about, analyzing all the different characters and their activities. There is a sort of humor to the scene, with a psychological characterization of the different characters. On the left side of the classroom, we can see several students working diligently. While another one has thrown his writing slate to the ground, he seems to have given up. In the center of the painting, we can see the older school teacher, explaining carefully to three of his students how the problems should be solved. In this work we can also see how De Braekeleer follows the composition schemes that were common in the seventeenth century. Think for instance of ‘little schools’ attributed to Adriaan Brouwer, Adriaan van Ostade or Jan Steen. Ferdinand de Braekeleer was a Flemish painter well known for his genre scenes and emerges from this painting as an excellent craftsman. The high quality of his works revived Belgian painting and his role as a teacher of the next generation of artists was significant. He taught at the Antwerp Academy from 1855 onwards, and had artists like Charles Venneman...

Woman with Two Children in Red - Dutch Style Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas
By Joseph Tomanek
Located in Soquel, CA
Woman with Two Children in Red - Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas Lovely interior scene by notable artist Joseph Tomanek (Cech-American, 1889-1974). A woman sits near a window, holding a small child dressed in bright red in her lap. Another child, somewhat older, stands next to her, looking at the young child. Soft lights spills though the window, illuminating the scene in a warm glow. A plant with red flowers sits on the windowsill, and foliage can be seen outside. Signed "Tomanek" in the lower right corner (note that the shape above the signature is a toy train) Presented in a carved wood frame with a linen liner. Frame size: 30.75"H x 26.75"W Canvas size: 24"H x 20"W Tomanek, the son of a carpenter, was born in Moravia. His family discouraged his art talent and wanted him to be a shoemaker. He studied in his homeland of Czechoslovakia at the School of Design in Prague. He emigrated to America around the turn of the century and arrived in Chicago in 1910 and worked as an interior decorator. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with Antonin Sterba. He also studied with Albert Krehbiel and K.A. Buehr. He was a member of the Bohemian Artist Club, Association of Chicago Painters, and Sculptors, and the Chicago Gallery Association. His work is included in the collection of the Vanderpoel Art Association (Chicago). He exhibited from the 1910s-40s, including exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Georgia Museum of Art. Of the difficulty of posing nudes in Chicago, he said, "In Paris you can rent little gardens studios and pose your models there in privacy. Here, if I work out of doors, I have to pose the girls in bathing suits...

Mother with Child, Rose, Old Master, Figurative Painting, Love, Christmas Scene
Located in Greven, DE
L. Franssen Mother and child with a rose Oil on wood, 44,5 x 33,5 cm signed The artist of this outstanding painting is completely unknown so far. There is no entry under "L. Franssen" in any encyclopaedia or reference work. There was a Dutch artist, Jan Fransen (1604/5 - ca. 1646), who was mainly based in Amsterdam. According to Thieme/Becker, he created numerous paintings with biblical depictions, study heads and still lifes. However, it could also have been Jan Franssen or Frantzen, who was not born until 1644 but was also active in Amsterdam. However, no confirmed works by either artist are known. Just as interesting as the attribution is the depiction: a young woman holds her child on her lap while she prepares a meal on a hob. At the same time she holds a rose in her hand. Most likely, Mary is depicted here with the young Jesus...

Large Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas of Tulips Displayed in a Confit Jar.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.
